America’s One and Only King

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

England has had kings on the throne for millenniums. Boomers know that America once had a king, too. But just one. Elvis Aron Pressley - born in a modest two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935 - was America’s king and his throne was any stage he occupied. Elvis Pressley was undeniably the most famous person of the Boomer generation. He was the King of Rock and Roll. As a boy, … [Read more...]

Humming Along

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

All is well in our backyard. The hummingbirds are at war. Talk about not sharing, if one hummingbird stakes out a feeder, he or she spends every waking hour making sure that one of its comrades does not sneak in for a quick sip of sugar water. So we put two feeders in the back yard and separated them. Play nice, little humming birds. There is a feeder for both. But no-o-o-oh! They still … [Read more...]

Sinfully Good Praline Grahams

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Sinners! Repent! You know who you are! All you evil beings out there who love sweets more than life itself. If I were the Devil, I would tempt you “sweeties” with this recipe. Praline Grahams. Every soul alive and dead knows how sinfully good a plain praline is, but put one a sweet, crunchy Graham Cracker, and it’s hard to beat in the sweet department. This is a treat that makes a few extra … [Read more...]

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

A big event is on the horizon for the Charlottesville Municipal Band. The Fall Benefit Concert on Tuesday Nov. 14 at the Paramount is more than just another great concert by some of Charlottesville’s most talented musicians. It’s also a “Band Aid”, if you will. All ticket sales will go toward the special $500,000 matching grant. The special program will included classical, popular, and jazz … [Read more...]

Madison Motors

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I needed a car. Though the engine on my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee was still going strong even after nearly 200,000 miles, the transmission fluid leaked – drip, drip, drip - on our driveway, which my wife Nancy noticed and remarked on frequently. It also started to rust on the roof above the dashboard, which actually helped me to be able to pick out my gray and orange vehicle among all the others … [Read more...]

See Ya’, Cobia!

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III   Cobia are going out with a bang. On clear days, sight-casting anglers are finding them in pods as they prepare to migrate out. On windy, NE blow days, chummers are having a field day. Enjoy them now as the season closes after September 15. If you have a recreational cobia permit and have not filed a catch report, do so by the end of September if you want to be able … [Read more...]

No Bluegill Left Behind

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I have decided that there is no such thing as a bluegill too small to keep. If they are big enough to bite the hook, they are big enough to scale, gut and toss in a hot skillet. In fact, I believe the best tasting are the smaller bluegills. To prove my point, I stopped by Lake Orange last weekend with a fly rod and a cup of red wigglers. Unquestionably, fly rods are bluegill-catching machines. Not … [Read more...]

Juke Boxes and Vanilla Sodas

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Anyone over the age of 50 knows first hand what a jukebox was. But ask a youngster today if he or she wants a nickel for the jukebox and you’ll get a blank stare. Boomers and jukeboxes grew up together and some of us are here because of jukeboxes, which brought our moms and dads together. In restaurants, at dance halls, at swimming pools, soda shops and fountains, there were jukeboxes. Some … [Read more...]
