John Koss has been in the sauce again. Actually, he’s into the sauce every day. That’s what John does. He makes Koss Sauce, a barbeque sauce, and it’s quite good. I find that most barbeque sauces at the store taste exactly the same. They are all super sweet and heavy. I’m not crazy about sweet sauces on roast pork for a barbeque sandwich. I like vinegar and pepper sauces for that. But I enjoy a … [Read more...]
All Crows Welcome
When I was in college, I drank Old Crow bourbon. First, it was dirt cheap, right there with Mattingly & Moore, but it was actually a decent bourbon. I have an old crow in my back yard, too. Actually, I have four old crows, as in birds. They visit each day because I strew cracked corn for them. In return, they help keep hawks away, so it’s a good trade-off. Some people – … [Read more...]
Chicken Parm Panko
If I could eat chicken every meal, I would be a string bean. Chicken, you see (unless it’s fried) has no calories. In fact, chicken has the unique ability to suck existing calories right out of your body. If all you ate was chicken, you would eventually disappear into thin air. Knowing that, one would assume that people who are trying to lose weight would eat chicken every meal. The problem … [Read more...]
Finley’s Service Center
When you don’t know a carburetor from a gas cap, you are at the mercy of whoever it is that works on your car. Many auto repair shops, especially those at the major dealerships, work on set fees and commissions, so it’s in their interest to find things wrong with your car, or things that might go wrong. There is only one shop I trust implicitly when my car needs attention, and that’s Finley’s … [Read more...]
BRRRR!!
VBSF Reports Frigid winter weather has set in on the lower Chesapeake Bay, but that didn’t stop some very hearty anglers from closing out the bay striper season with a bang. A number of fish topping 40-pounds were weighted the finale week. Now it’s time to turn our attention to ocean waters. The Virginia coastal season for striped bass opens January 1st and we can continue harvesting … [Read more...]
Ice Fishing
Ice Fishing? Why not? We have lots of solid ice on ponds and lakes now in Virginia and believe it or not, fish will bite even in these frigid temperatures. I had an opportunity to go ice fishing with the late Bob Gooch in a small lake near Manassas a few years back. Bob knew a fellow from Wisconsin who was an avid ice fisherman. He had augers and spikes and shovels and readily made several … [Read more...]
Electric Football
Boomers look back on the week after Christmas as a time to enjoy Santa’s bounty. We had new Flexible Flyer sleds, in case it snowed. We had Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse watches to set. We likely had a few new 45 records from Top Ten artists. We had Scrabble and Monopoly games to play. We had new Saddle oxford shoes and argyle sweaters. We had batteries for our transistor radios and some … [Read more...]
Rockfish Season Goes Out With a Bang
Virginia anglers would certainly love a few more weeks to wrestle with some 50-pound plus rockfish, but the season ends this Sunday. With the colder water dipping into the lower 50’s, huge schools of bunker bunched up and anglers watched for the birds to direct them to rockfish ranging from schoolies to 60-pounders. Hopefully, the ocean fishing striper season will take up the slack, … [Read more...]
Winter Practice at The Highlands
Another golf year is in the rear view mirror as cold weather settles in for a few months. But it sure would be nice to practice up for next spring – correct that ugly slice, work on your lob wedge and other clubs. This is all possible at the Highlands Practice Facility in Ruckersville. Highlands offers a great place to practice even in winter. The tee stations are covered and … [Read more...]
Big Bucks, Smaller Kill
The word on the hunting streets is that while the deer kill may be down a little in numbers, the quality of deer has been excellent. There are have been some really nice animals harvested to date. Last year’s mild weather and solid mast crop, no doubt, has helped in raising healthy animals. But because of the recent efforts of the Game Department to control populations by a generous … [Read more...]
