Back from the Lighting Market

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer   Dallas, Texas is the place to go for the best Lighting Market. I just returned from there and it was a very exciting Market. Nancy B’s House of Lights, our lighting showroom in Charlottesville, is packed with hundreds of fixtures, but seeing thousands of fixtures in three days is like eating an entire red velvet cake at one sitting (I actually might like to … [Read more...]

Celia’s Mock Toffee

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Celia Branch, our one-time across-the-street neighbor, was one of the sweetest humans who ever lived. She was good natured to a fault, always had a smile on her face and left this earth entirely too soon. And could she ever cook! Celia did elaborate cakes for weddings and would often share her kitchen concoctions with us. One of her special treats, and one of the best tasting things you can put … [Read more...]

Remembering School Lunches

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   (ed. Note: Last week I did a piece on school lunches in the old days. Sherman Shifflett, a frequent contributor, recalls his experiences with school lunches.)   There were 11 children in my family and mom said I was the only one who did not like peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches. It doesn't make sense because I like peanuts and I like … [Read more...]

It Works

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

A few weeks back, my son, Jimmie, emailed and said he had a guaranteed way to easily remove the shells from a hard-boiled egg, and the eggs didn’t necessarily have to be a week old. He said he had steamed the eggs, not boiled them. I said he was just lucky. He did it again and sent me pictures. I still didn’t believe him, but then last week, I needed some hard-boiled eggs for eggs salad. They … [Read more...]

Richard’s Landscaping & Handyman Service

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

You need a good car mechanic. Someone you can trust. I have Mark Finley with Finley’s Exxon. Bingo. You also need a good plumber. Again, somebody you can rely on for good service and fair prices. I have Mr. Faucet, Pat Crowley. Two for two. And if you’re like me, a complete Klutz around the house, incapable of distinguishing which side of the hammer does nails, you really need a good handyman … [Read more...]

South River Report

February 21, 2019 by Jim Brewer

The South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro reports that the Shenandoah Valley Trout Unlimited has now stocked the South River twice since October and will be funding a third stocking later this spring on the South River Catch and Release section. Keven Little says the river was running at 350cfs, well within the range of good fishing. Midges and caddis have started hatching on both the Catch and … [Read more...]

Packing Lunch

February 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

My daughter was telling me recently about the “Dos and Don’ts” of school lunches these days - especially lunches sent from home. Apparently, the modern Lunch Nazis now rifle through each Spiderman lunchbox or brown paper bag to approve or disapprove of what children can eat. Donuts are definite “no-no’s and so are Oreo cookies. When I was a kid, you only got an Oreo cookie if you’d behaved … [Read more...]

Cart Path Only – Forever

February 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Somehow, I managed to squeeze in a couple rounds of golf in the past two weeks, dodging the ever-present rain and intermittent cold. I played Old Trail, then Spring Creek. Both courses were in amazing shape, considering, but were they ever wet! I could see my partner’s golf shoes kicking up a spray of water with every step. A high iron to the green would on occasion bury the ball … [Read more...]

Too Wet to Plow

February 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Lots of backyard gardeners like to get started with their early plantings around the first of March. Some say, “Plant potatoes by March 15 and harvest on the Fourth of July.” Wild onions will soon be peeking through the grass and spring onions can go in the ground as soon as you’re ready. Trouble is: When will the ground be ready? The soil is unbelievably wet. My back yard has the … [Read more...]

Anna’s Pizza

February 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Last week, Nancy and I were watching TV and a commercial came on depicting a big slice of pizza, oozing cheese and goodness. It brought back memories of Anna’s Pizza on Maury Avenue, not far from Scott Stadium. We had not eaten there in years and wondered if it was even still open. It is, and last Sunday night, we made a special trip across town to see if it was as good as we … [Read more...]
