Ahhh-Chooo!

April 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We were at Lake Norman near Charlotte this past weekend and Nancy got the sniffles. “Ahh tink ahm ketchin a code!” she said. I looked out at Lake Norman, saw a bunch of yellow pollen on the lake and diagnosed her with an allergy. She took a couple of antihistamine tablets and squirted Flonase, but she still had a “code.” On the way home, I saw why. We were driving up I-85 near Durham … [Read more...]

Cracker Barrel

April 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We were on the road, needed a place to stop and eat and decided against fast food. One place beckoned. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Cracker Barrel is to travelers what honey is to Winnie the Pooh. They are known for good food, friendly service and reasonable prices. Cracker Barrel was founded in 1969 with a menu based on Southern Cuisine. Today, Cracker Barrel has over 600 stores in 42 … [Read more...]

Welcome, Black Drum!

April 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Like the swallows of Capistrano, the black drum are coming home. With the water temperature at Thimble Shoal now at 51,  the drum are starting to show up along the bayside of the Eastern Shore. Good locations are the Cabbage Patch, near the Concrete Ships, Buoy 13, near the high rise of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, around 36A and off of Cape Charles. Look for boats anchored close together in … [Read more...]

A Spring Fling for Shad

April 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Peter Brookes   The shad run starts around the beginning of the spring calendar, marking the official end of winter and the unofficial beginning of the fishing season in the Commonwealth. As VDGIF fisheries biologist, Alan Weaver, puts it: “Fishing for shad in Virginia is a rite of spring.” Some may  be unaware that shad have a storied history. For instance, it … [Read more...]

Stewball Was a Racehorse

April 4, 2019 by Jim Brewer

In the fall of 1962, folk music reached its peak. Joan Baez, the Kingston Trio, Brothers Four, The Limeliters, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, The Highwaymen, and Peter, Paul and Mary filled the airways with their folksy music and sold albums like they were going out of style. I was a freshman at UNC and by the time Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers came to … [Read more...]

BLT Pasta Salad

April 4, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Entrees are usually no problem for a Home Chef. There are hundreds of things you can do to a chicken and more than that with beef. It’s the sides to go with the entrees that often confound this chef. I tend to get in a rut and serve the same-old, same-old. Recently I saw a recipe for a BLT Pasta Salad. I like pasta and love BLTs, so how could I go wrong? I made a batch and ate enough to gain … [Read more...]

Special Visitors

April 4, 2019 by Jim Brewer

When I’m at home, I spend as much time as I can at the kitchen window checking on my birds. It is always a great joy to see special visitors. They were there this morning, a flock of Cedar Waxwings, stopping by for a drink of water from our bird bath. They flew down, then back up into the tree. They did this five or six times. One bird landed on a limb just outside our kitchen window. … [Read more...]

The Price of Golf

April 4, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Golf can be an expensive game. A set of new Callaway Clubs can cost as much as a used car. Golf balls push $50 a dozen and it takes a lot of time, usually five- or six-hours including travel time to get in a round. And that doesn’t count greens fees. Last week, our regular foursome picked Old Trail as our designated course. Nobody bothered to ask about prices. It was still March, on a … [Read more...]

Southern Roots

April 4, 2019 by Jim Brewer

My southern roots go deep. My daddy and his family were raised in Clemmons, just outside Winston Salem.  My mother’s people were from Raleigh. My second daddy was from the Wilson area. My closest aunt and uncle were from Charlotte. I grew up eating southern food and enjoying southern hospitality. So it was with great enthusiasm that Nancy and I went to dinner with my daughter Angelin and her … [Read more...]
