If you’re headed to the Outer Banks for the 4th of July, you’re in luck. The fish – lots of fish – are biting. At Nags Head, pier jockeys are hauling in blues, Spanish, sheepshead, spadefish and a few cobia. Surf fishermen are finding spot, sea mullet, blues, and sharks – like the dusky shark above. Swimming anyone? Soundside fishing has been good for trout, drum, sheepshead and bluefish. … [Read more...]
A (Whole) Lot of Milk
I went to the store the other day. We needed milk, but they were out of the half-gallon size of 2% milk. So, I bought whole milk. What a difference. The rich taste of the whole milk whisked my memories back to the days when the milkman made deliveries. You could hear him coming a block away – the engine chugging on the old, white truck and hundreds of glass bottles clinking inside. He was … [Read more...]
The Best Buy: Split Chicken Breasts
The very best buy in a grocery store today is a package of Bone-in, Skin-on, Split Chicken Breasts. Not every store sells them, but I find them at Aldi’s and Food Lion on a regular basis. They run about $1.99 a pound and a package of plump breasts is usually less than $6. Boneless, skinless chicken breast at Kroger’s or Harris Teeter run $6 a pound and more. So, you are paying about triple to have … [Read more...]
Chop House Tavern in Staunton
Staunton is rocking! Once a sleepy little valley town known primarily as the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, Staunton is spreading its wings and bringing in art, fine restaurants, and lots of tourists. One restaurant, the Chop House Tavern, makes the 45-minute drive to Staunton well worthwhile. Our daughter, Laura, treated us to a dinner there in celebration of Nancy’s birthday, and what a dinner … [Read more...]
Bio-Tone Starter Plus
My tomato vines are now over 6 feet tall, and they are full of blooms and baby tomatoes. As a matter of fact, I picked my first tomato today – plump, ripe and juicy. It looks like it’s going to be a great season. I give credit to the promising crop because of three main reasons – first, Mother Nature has blessed us with plenty of rain so far, Second, I took Mark Levisay’s advice … [Read more...]
A Tushy Experience
This is going to be awkward, “butt” here goes. When we were in Lancaster County a month or so back, we stayed at a really nice Air B&B cottage that happened to have a Tushy, a Bidet, installed on the toilet. Nancy read the instructions, which were simple, and used it first. She liked it and suggested I give it a try. I did, and I was so impressed I bought a Tushy from Amazon as soon … [Read more...]
An Amazing Burn Remedy
Lots of stuff comes rolling down the Internet Pike – lots of it rubbish, but this piece caught my attention. As a cook, I am forever burning myself, usually due to chronic clumsiness, so this person’s home remedy for burns was appealing. Here’s what the writer said. “My experience with burns is this: Once I was cooking some corn and stuck my fork in the boiling water to see if the corn … [Read more...]
That First Big Bass
I caught my first fish when I was about 6, a small bluegill. I could only dream about catching a bass – any bass. When I was 8, I caught my first one, maybe 7-inches, but to me it was like a 12-foot blue marlin At 14, I caught my first decent bass, just shy of 16-inches and I was beyond excited. The youngster above caught his nice bass at Lake Orange this week, and it was significantly larger … [Read more...]
My First Pedicure
Nancy walked by my bare feet recently and stared in disbelief. “You need a pedicure,’ she said. “Not me,” I countered. “I’m a football-watching kind of guy.” “No, really, you’ll like it. Go to Happy Nails just down the street and ask for a basic pedicure.” Actually, the idea somewhat appealed to me since cutting my toenails recently has required a supreme effort. I am forced to crouch in positions … [Read more...]
Lunch at Trump Winery
In 1990, John Kluge – one of the world’s richest men – gave his divorced wife, Patricia, a huge settlement which included the Albemarle County property where she later opened a vineyard and winery. By 2006, Patricia’s attempt at establishing a profitable winery business collapsed and the property went into bankruptcy. The Trump family, recognizing a truly outstanding piece of property, purchased … [Read more...]
