The Golden Age of Fine Clothing

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I moved to Charlottesville on the first day of February in 1967. Bill Leggett had hired me as Men’s Buyer for the new Leggett’s Barracks Road Store with the idea that Leggett’s would no longer be a work clothes and $3 white shirt store. They were looking to enter in the world of fashion, to sell better clothing. My background included an intensive education in clothing at the University of … [Read more...]

Babies on the Way

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

“Hello? Fulker Farms? This is the guy in Virginia who buys all those meal worms from you and I’m going to need more. I have three families of cardinals nesting in my yard!” That was more or less my conversation this afternoon with the Fluker lady who ships my worms. The cardinals’ baby food should be arriving in a couple days. Our first cardinal family had built a nest in a … [Read more...]

El Agave Restaurant

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I’m not the greatest one to write a review about Mexican restaurants. When we go, my wife Nancy often has to interpret the menu. “Tell me one more time the difference between a fajita and a tamale?” But I know what I like, and I enjoy El Agave Restaurant in Ruckersville. Many say it’s as close to authentic Mexican cuisine as it gets in this area. My sister, Johanna, who lives in … [Read more...]

Evaporated Corn Pudding

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

There are two things I most remember about evaporated milk. First, it was the creamer for my Mom’s and Dad’s morning coffee. There was always a little can of Carnation Evaporated Milk in the refrigerator with two small holes punched in the top, and my folks used that along with some sugar for their coffee. The second memory involves my Uncle Jim’s recipe for home made ice cream. Instead of milk … [Read more...]

“Who” Is It?

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Recently, Marsha Boggess, my sister-in-law was able to take a cell phone picture of an owl, just outside her window and sent it to everybody in the family. We all oohed and aahed, of course. My son, Jimmie, thought it was a Barred Owl. It is really unusual, however, to ever see an owl, especially in the daytime. They are most certainly nocturnal creatures. Most of my dealings with … [Read more...]

Ready Fore Golf

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I used my Ready Fore Golf kit twice last week. On one occasion, I drove my Titleist Pro V I down the fairway and into some fresh goose droppings. It was nasty. But no problem for me. I dug out a Handi Wipe, cleaned the ball thoroughly, then proceeded to knock it across a fence into a brier thicket. But at least I can take satisfaction knowing it was a clean “lost ball.” Not … [Read more...]

Big Crappie Showing Up

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Stan Cobb at Greentop reports that crappie fishing has been very good this week. Numerous 2-plus pound fish have been weighed in at Sturgeon Creek Marina at Lake Anna. At least one 3-pounder was weighed in at Bobcat’s, caught from Kerr Lake. The stripers are very active at Anna and Kerr, as they are performing their spawning rituals. Bass are spawning just about everywhere, especially … [Read more...]

How to Catch a Flounder

May 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill, III   Flounder are among the most sought-after fish in our waters. They are great to eat and fun to catch. In Virginia, it is primarily an April through November fishery though some are caught in March and December. Early season action is found in the seaside inlets of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Wachapreague has a world-class fishery that peaks from April through … [Read more...]

You (Haven’t) Got Mail

April 25, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Last Saturday morning, and for no apparent reason, I could neither send nor receive E-mails. No problem for this Boomer-type computer whiz. I did what all good Geeks do. I turned the computer off and rebooted (that means turning it off and starting again for those out there who are not computer whizzes). Still, no E-mails. Hmmmm! Alright, now for the serious stuff. I “Force Quit” … [Read more...]

Morel Time

April 25, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I had never eaten a morel until my old friend Carl Oakes asked if I wanted a few. Not wanting to offend, I said, “Sure”,  but I had no idea what they were or what to do with the strange looking spores. Later I found out that morels, wild mushrooms, were mountain delicacies and highly desirable. On several occasions since then, I have taken to the hills and picked them myself. … [Read more...]
