Grilled Yellow Squash

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

When squash comes in, it really comes in. Four yellow squash plants will produce enough to feed the Washington Redskins defensive line, with enough leftovers for the special teams. You pick two and by the time you get to the house, three have taken their place. It is a prodigious garden vegetable. Fortunately, I love yellow squash , which I think has a better flavor and is more versatile … [Read more...]

Queen Anne’s Lace

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Since I noticed and identified what I believe to be a Butterfly Weed a few weeks back, I have been watching along the roadsides in my recent travels. There are some beautiful plants in nature, many of them considered weeds. One such plant is Queen Anne’s Lace. There seems to be a bountiful crop this year. Yesterday I saw a ten-acre field almost entirely covered with the delicate white … [Read more...]

The Brew House in Blackstone

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Cville Buzz’s ace reporter, Sherman Shifflett, has uncovered another eating establishment worthy of our attention – the Brew House in Blackstone. Here is Sherman’s account of the experience.   “Ava Pippin and I don't travel much on holidays because there is too much traffic. We may take a short drive on the holiday itself, because traffic is light. Last July 4, 2018. we meandered around … [Read more...]

The Resident Sportsman’s License

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Each year, Virginia sportsmen either go on line or make multiple visit to the local sporting goods store for a variety of hunting and fishing licenses. They often buy a regular hunting license, a bear license, a deer and turkey license, an archery license, muzzleloading license, a freshwater fishing license and a trout stamp. If they forget even one, there can be a hefty fine. This … [Read more...]

Hybrid English Cucumbers

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

This spring I planted four hybrid cucumber vines I bought from the Corner Store Garden Center in Ruckersville. They are Sweet Success Hybrid Cucumbers which grow and resemble English cucumbers – long and straight. The damned rabbits nearly mowed down three on my young plants before I could put netting over them, but one vine is doing great and the others are making a comeback. About a week ago, … [Read more...]

We Get Letters

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

(Trumpet Vine) Got a couple letters from my articles last week – one concerning my search for the identification of a beautiful roadside bloom I saw. Hal Hurka wrote that it might be a Trumpet Vine. Says Hal, “I can’t tell from your photo if the flowers on the mystery plant are trumpet shaped or not. If they are, it is probably a Trumpet Vine or similar plant. We saw one years ago and my … [Read more...]

A Huge Anna Bass

July 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Last week, Ronnie Williams fished in a Tuesday Night Tournament out of Sturgeon Creek at Lake Anna and put a bass weighing 11.03 on the scales. Naturally, he won the Big Fish Category. Eleven pounds is a serious size bass. The winning bag of 5 fish totaled 20.9 pounds. Stripers are also biting at Anna, but mostly in the wee morning hours and again at dusk. Night fishing is  also … [Read more...]

Mama Ida’s Fried Corn Bread

July 2, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Mama Ida was a second mother to me. When my father was shot down and killed over Burma in WW II just a few days before I was born, my young mother went home from the hospital broken hearted and most distressed. Her mother, Mama Ida, pitched in and cared for me like her own son. In fact, she was the first I called “Mama”, but they quickly changed that to Mama Ida. My wonderful sweet grandmother and … [Read more...]
