Back in the late 1970’s, one of the most targeted of all the saltwater gamefish in Virginia was the grey trout, or weakfish as they are sometimes called. Anglers dropping rigs around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel regularly pulled in ten to twelve-pound fish. In 1982, the state record, a 19-pounder, was boated. Then, the big greys largely disappeared. The head boats were lucky to put a … [Read more...]
The Golden Age of Radio
I spend about an hour a day in my car, more if I’m on a trip, and I always have the radio on. I pretty much ignore talk radio anymore – too depressing, so I listen to the oldies station or light rock. It’s background noise, mostly, something to occupy the time. But there was once a time when the radio not only made noise, it entertained us. Many Boomers recall the Golden Age of radio. I grew … [Read more...]
Mangy Foxes
“There is a fox drinking water out of the bird bath,” Nancy said. “Is Elvis with him,” I asked. But there was a fox drinking water in our front yard in the middle of the day. And he had very little hair on most of his skinny body. This would be the second fox I’ve seen recently in broad daylight in need of some serious Rogaine. The other mangy animal was at the first hole at Meadowcreek … [Read more...]
Mexican Tomatoes, Beans and Rice
I do a little cooking for some kids who love Mexican food, especially Tacos. They devour Tacos, it’s a fun dish to serve, but I’m usually at a loss as to what else to serve with this dish. Doritos and salsa works, and so does refried beans. But I wondered what else might fit that’s more in the vegetable category. This week I experimented and came up with a simple but tasty side dish for tacos … [Read more...]
Fear The Freezer
It was the summer of 1973 and we had made close friends with Donald and Janice Ramirez from church. We ate at each other’s house, went out to eat together and had kids about the same age. It was destined to be a great friendship. They had even asked us to watch over their house in Woodbrook while they spent a week with family back in New Orleans. “I’d be delighted to feed the fish and the cats … [Read more...]
Log Cabin BBQ
The official results of the Virginia BBQ Restaurant contest sponsored by Virginia Living Magazine should be available soon, but in the meantime, there’s a pretty good “Q” restaurant not too far from Charlottesville. It’s the Log Cabin BBQ restaurant located between Elkton and Harrisonburg on Rt. 33, near the entrance to Massanutten. The name Log Cabin is appropriate because it is a log … [Read more...]
Bumper Crop of Okra
All in all, I have had a pretty good garden this year. I had an early crop of creasy greens – left over from the plantings of previous spring. I had some nice lettuce, beets, onions, tomatoes, and yellow squash. The rabbits ate all of my peas and most of my cucumber vines, but one cuke made it and has been producing overtime to make up for the rest. The lonely vine is still blooming and growing – … [Read more...]
Summer Trout Tips
By Harry Murray At this time of the season the low, clear trout streams present us with a challenge which produces an exceptionally gratifying form of angling. The trout carefully select feeding stations which enable them to capture the greatest amount of food while exerting the least amount of energy. They are exceptionally wary now and since the natural food is sparse the largest … [Read more...]
Specks at Oregon Inlet
There has been some of the most spectacular speckled trout fishing in recent memory on the Outer Banks at Oregon Inlet. Acres and acres of vast grass beds draw bait like shrimp, crabs and mullet and the trout have moved in to take advantage. Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Fishing continues to put his clients on trout, with near daily limits and some nice fish, as well. “It’s still great, as … [Read more...]
A Special Place: Garner, NC
Garner, North Carolina. How well I remember this special place on the outskirts of Raleigh. Today, Garner is a bustling city, a bedroom community of Raleigh, but in the 1950’s, it was a small, sleepy village with a country store, a couple Baptist churches and a post office. Each summer, I spent a week or two in Raleigh with my grandmother, Mama Ida – who pretty much spoiled me rotten. … [Read more...]
