Dam Removed on Moore’s Creek

November 28, 2019 by Jim Brewer

In 2016 and 2017, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF), along with several key partners, completed two restoration projects on Moores Creek in Charlottesville, Virginia to benefit aquatic wildlife and water quality. Moores Creek, which flows through the City of Charlottesville, is a tributary to the Rivanna River, which flows to the James River. For decades, urbanization and … [Read more...]

Outer Banks Stripers

November 28, 2019 by Jim Brewer

While Virginia striper fishermen are experiencing a little rough going, the striper fishing around Nags Head has been red hot. There have always been stripers back in the sounds behind Nags Head, but the fish have generally run small – lots of throwbacks and few over 20-inches. All of a sudden, that has changed. Anglers are catching some very nice sized stripers in the sounds and lots of … [Read more...]

Muskies in Virginia

November 28, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By VDGIF   Muskie - the fish of a thousand casts. We’ve got them in Virginia and here’s how the Game Department says to catch them.   River fishermen use rafts, kayaks, canoes, or small boats with electric motors or small outboards to float larger pools and fish near woody debris, large boulders, drop offs, or weed lines. We suggest using an eight foot medium heavy rod with … [Read more...]

Hawaii, Hawaii

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

When we touched down at the Honolulu Airport it was 88 degrees. Perhaps 85 or 86 would have been more comfortable, but I’ll take 88 in the middle of November. This was to be our second visit to the Aloha State in the past two years. This beautiful island paradise draws tourists like a magnet – an inviting climate, extreme beauty and incredibly friendly people. There are only two problems … [Read more...]

Aloha! Welcome to Hawaii

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Not only is Hawaii a place of beauty, it is a geological wonder. Hawaii is one of the newest pieces of real estate in the world. The earth’s center is a hot spot. Hot enough to boil rocks. There is a place in the Pacific that– when the earth turns exactly right – gets extra hot and erupts. It first erupted years ago and it’s still spewing lava. The depth of the Pacific in these parts can extend … [Read more...]

Whales and Jaws

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

The most visited island in Hawaii? If you said Oahu, home of Honolulu, you’d be wrong. It’s Maui, the second largest island. But this is a recent phenomenon. Today  Maui is known for two things. Whales and jaws. But not jaws as in sharks, but “jaws” as in the fury of tidal waves crashing along a certain beach on the western coast. This is surfing country and a  place the locals … [Read more...]

Wowie! It’s Maui!

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We packed a lot of action in our two day layover in Maui. We had not booked any of the cruise excursions because we didn’t know how long it would take us to recover from our trip. So about mid-morning the first day, we ventured from the ship and found a bus called Hula Hopper run by a few locals. We signed up for a tour on both days and truly got our money’s worth. Our first stop … [Read more...]

High Over Hilo

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I was a little edgy the last time I boarded a helicopter. It was a chopper in Kauai on our last cruise. But this time I was excited to hop into the 6-passenger aircraft. The most spectacular views of Hawaii, I have discovered, come from the air. Our pilot spun us around and headed for the lava fields. We were in Hilo on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii, the site of the 2018 … [Read more...]

Swimming With The Fishes

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I were having breakfast in the cafe, with the ship docked  just off the coast of Kona. About 500 yards from the ship, I saw a school of tuna chasing baitfish off the port side. It was hard to judge, but they appeared to be 30 or 40 pound yellowfin tuna. While a tuna will eat a ten pound bluefish, a whale will eat a 50 pound tuna like we would munch on a pretzel. I has hoped … [Read more...]

Kauai: Primitive Splendor

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

As we approached the island on Thursday morning, we were greeted with jutting cliffs, a full palette of emerald green and angry shorelines of black and rust. I fully expected to see a dinosaur feeding in a grove of bamboo. This is Kauai, a place of extreme beauty and primitive splendor. This is the island movie producers chose to film Jurassic Park, South Pacific and Raiders of the Lost Ark. For … [Read more...]
