No-Crust Mexican Quiche

January 16, 2020 by Jim Brewer

In Dallas last week at the Lighting Show, we stopped by a showroom serving lunch – Mexican fare. One dish looked interesting, it looked like a quiche, a Mexican Quiche. I sampled some and it was delicious. Since the server was not fluent in English, I couldn’t get the recipe so I tried my own version when we returned from the Lone Star State. It turned out well.  Here’s how I did … [Read more...]

Never a “Duh” Moment

January 16, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Ever have a “Duh” moment? You know, when it finally dawns on you that you have been doing something really dumb for years and didn’t realize it? Yeah, me too. Happened just this week. I have been barbequing chicken to various states of doneness and burned-ness for 50 years. You’d figure I have it down pat – to a science, Nope. Just this week I figured it out. One of the keys of … [Read more...]

De-ice and Attract Birds

January 16, 2020 by Jim Brewer

There are basically two ways to attract birds to your yard – food and water. Of the two, water maybe more important – especially during a dry summer when neighborhood water is scarce, and in winter, when water sources are often frozen. Birds can live for a while without food, but they need water every day. For several years, we have maintained a couple of  de-iced bird baths, one in the … [Read more...]

Catch and Release Rockfish

January 16, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Stan Cobb with Greentop says there’s not a lot happening on the saltwater front. There are, however, still plenty of rockfish available inside the bay for catch and release fishing. The best action has been between buoys 38 and 42, about a 25 mile run up the bay from Lynnhaven Inlet. Loads of really big fish are being caught on live eels. Ocean anglers are catching plenty of tautogs on wrecks … [Read more...]

A Nobel Laureate

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

I fully expect to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the coming weeks. I wanted my readers at CvilleBuzz to be the first to know. I suppose I will accept the award, though there are probably others equally deserving. My discovery of a new state of matter is the reason for this honor. We were always told – throughout high school and even into college – that there are three … [Read more...]

Testing, Testing!

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Every Boomer remembers test patterns. In the early days of television, each channel (usually one or two, that’s all we got) began the day and ended broadcasting with a test pattern on the screen. Most of us didn’t know what a test pattern was, really, or its purpose. All we knew that when the test pattern finally appeared (it took the tubes a while to warm up), there was nothing on the … [Read more...]

Smoked Kitchen and Tap

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

There is a new restaurant in town, in Crozet actually, and according to my golf buddy, Kevin Mann, it is worth a visit. Normally, I don’t do restaurant reviews on secondhand information, but Kevin is most reliable. Only once has he tried to putt my ball on the green since it was closer to the hole. Other than that, he is pretty solid. Kevin said that he ended up in Crozet at dinner … [Read more...]

Out With The Old, In With The New

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Goodbye 2019. You were a good year and 2020 is going to be even better. We won’t be looking in the rearview mirror, instead we are looking forward and in the lighting world, it’s necessary. As I head to Dallas to the LightOvation Market, I look forward to the new designs, fashions and trends being offered. We always want our lighting fixtures on display to be … [Read more...]

Suet Time

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

My two suet feeders have been getting more and more attention since the weather got cold. They were quite popular this week with a few inches of snow on the ground and nothing much to eat except for my feeders and the seeds I scattered. I saw nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, sparrows, chickadees, titmice and wrens squeezing in and out of the suet cages. Suet is … [Read more...]

Saying Southern Goodbyes

January 7, 2020 by Jim Brewer

(Saw this in a recent e-mail. It’s worth sharing)   Southerners never just stand up, say goodbye and leave. There is a process, a 9-step process, and it goes like this.   “About to leave” warning “We’ve got to get going,” statement Hugs Walking to the driveway One more conversation in the driveway More hugs Talking while everyone’s piling in the … [Read more...]
