Sea Bass Out, Tautogs In

March 5, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Virginia anglers wrapped up another short February black sea bass season. When weather permitted access to the reefs and wrecks, bottom fishing for sea bass and tautog was good. Unfortunately our sea bass season is over, but the tautog season continues. There have been reports of decent speckled trout catches. Louis Glaser and Douglas Wilburn posted about a good bite on the Elizabeth … [Read more...]

Boomer Do’s and Don’ts

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

There is now an app for just about everything on the planet. But oddly, there is not an App for Boomers - a complete listing of all the perils with which we might contend. I suppose the Good Lord figured that at this stage of our lives we’d have better sense than to do certain things – like play touch football with children and grandchildren. On a recent Thanksgiving, I did. And I’m “thank-ful” to … [Read more...]

A Variety of Seed Means a Variety of Birds

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Go to a store that sells bird seed and you will find dozens of choices. But there is no such thing as a universal, one-size-fits-all bird food. To attract lots of birds, I have found that it is necessary to offer a variety of seeds and food. I have two seed feeders, two suet feeder, a thistle feeder for birds which come to feeders, plus I scatter tons of seeds in the back for ground feeders. … [Read more...]

A Squirrel Baffle Kit

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

I once had a bluebird feeder box. It was hand-crafted from pine wood and plexiglass. There were several small holes in the plexiglass where the bluebirds could enter and feed on meal worms, which they would be able to see through the clear glass. It worked like a charm until I made the mistake of putting a few sunflower hearts inside the feeder. When the squirrels discovered that there were … [Read more...]

Carolina Cioppino

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

By James Friend Dickerson Since I cook to match the dietary needs of my guests, this is not your traditional cioppino (no tomatoes or vegetables). So let’s get started on a delicious, hearty stew! If we’re not at the beach, I head to Wegman's and pick through the available seafood. Since a step-son earns his way as a commercial fisherman, I steer away from farm raised seafood and go for … [Read more...]

Hardee’s Thickburger

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Hardee’s stormed into the fast food market in the 1960’s. A N.C.-based restaurant, Hardee’s opened the first location in Greenville, NC in September 1960. Hawking 15c hamburgers and 20c cheeseburgers, Hardee’s gave McDonald’s a run for their money in the southeast and began offering homemade biscuits to their breakfast menu. In the early days, local housewives baked at home and delivered … [Read more...]

Lost: 3 Billion Birds

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

By Biologist Sergio Harding   Birds are important. And we should care about what is happening to them. That is the gist of the press surrounding a recent study that estimates that nearly three billion birds have disappeared form North America since the 1970s.   The headlines are meant to grab your attention, regardless of whether you already have an interest in birds. The goal is to … [Read more...]

Golf, Finally!

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Two months and no golf! For a golf nut like me, that’s like solitary confinement for a con.  Every Wednesday (our golfing sabbath), it has been cold, nasty, rainy or all of the above. Finally, an opening. We played Old Trail last week and then Lake Monticello this Wednesday.  It was good to get back on the course. I was pleased Old Trail came to their senses about exorbitant rates. They still … [Read more...]

Head Boats are Running

February 27, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Last Saturday and Sunday, the Rudee Angler out of Virginia Beach took advantage of favorable weather and Virginia’s special February black sea bass season. Anglers aboard the head boat caught black sea bass, bluefish and even released a few blueline tilefish. The Rudee Angler runs offshore trips virtually year around. Phone them at 757-425-3400 for information on a future … [Read more...]
