The cable company called me this week and offered free cable TV for a year if I would sign back up. We had dropped the cable about a month or so ago when our bill hit $150 and we didn’t even subscribe to any of the premium channels. “No thanks,” I responded to the cable lady. “We’re happy with Hulu.” Hulu charges us about $50 a month and offers jillions more options than cable. The only … [Read more...]
Return to Bonefish
Finally. I can write an Eating Out column again. We actually went out to dinner for the first time in over two months. We called Bonefish for a reservation. I figured that with all the restaurants reopening, they would be packed and it would be difficult to be seated. But they weren’t, even at limited seating capacity. We watched as more take-out bags were delivered outside than meals to … [Read more...]
Goodbye Grackles
Goodbye and good riddance to the flocks of grackles that have invaded my yard and decimated my feeders since late March. Slowly but surely, their numbers have diminished. Now, there are just a few remaining that pound my sunflower heart feeder and they will soon be gone. Grackles are more of a marsh-oriented bird, but they come inland to breed and nest during April, May and June. Their nesting … [Read more...]
Roasted Cauliflower
As comedian Ron White once said when approached by a police officer while drunk at a bar, “I had the right to remain silent. I just didn’t have the ability.” Ron subsequently gave the cop some lip and spent the night in the pokey. Similarly, I know how to lose weight, but I often lack the ability. Losing weight is most difficult if you like to cook, eat out occasionally and entertain. So … [Read more...]
The Invasion of Cobia
They are pouring into the Chesapeake Bay like an army of invading warriors. Cobia, cobia and more cobia, and most anglers who are trying for them are having success. Dr Ken Neill, for example, set up chum lines and caught six. Cobia now are spread from the mouth of the bay up to the Potomac. Live eels have been dynamite baits. Sight casters, too, are pulling in cobia to 70 pounds. Virginia … [Read more...]
Life On The Amazon
My hunting pants had met their match in a spirited contest with a blackberry thicket on the last day of the season. There was big tear across the right front leg and a 12-inch rip in the back seat. Unfortunately, the rip in the seat had nothing to do with the blackberry thicket, but more to do with too many blackberry pie servings throughout the year. So I needed a new pair of … [Read more...]
Bojangles – For Biscuits!
Nancy and I came close to dining out this week – we went to Bojangles and ordered a take-out bucket of fried chicken, For us, this was a real treat. We rarely indulge in fried chicken. I have searched high and low and found fried chicken missing in action from any and all of Weight Watcher’s Suggested Diets. But every now and then, right? Before we ordered chicken, I considered my … [Read more...]
Taco Rolls Ups
I came across an interesting recipe for an appetizer. The kids of a family I cook for love anything Mexican, especially tacos and I figured they would enjoy Taco Roll Ups. They did. They are delicious and super easy. You can actually make these with shredded chicken or beef, but I just went for the meatless recipe. Basically, you use floured tortillas, sour cream, whipped cream … [Read more...]
Mosquito Plants: They Work
It really bothers me to see all these signs saying their yards have been mosquito-proofed with poison. I seems to me that if you poison mosquitos, you poison beneficial insects that birds feed on. I don’t want more poison in my yard, I want less, but I absolutely don’t want mosquitos biting my grandchildren or backyard guests. Last year, Nancy bought a couple mosquito plants, potted … [Read more...]
My Pet Robin
I have a pet robin. Well, I had a pet robin, but now I’m not so sure. It began about a month ago as I was feeding mealworms to my bluebirds in a guarded feeder with a dome on top that allows small birds entry, but not larger birds, like robins. But every time I went to feed the bluebirds, a robin showed up, gobbling any meal worms that may hit the ground. Mr. Softie here felt sorry … [Read more...]
