Fishing With Angler’s Lane

July 30, 2020 by Jim Brewer

The James Since 1999 we have guided our home water, the James and know it well. Lynchburg is the southern-most stretch west of the fall line. We focus most closely on the stretches within 40 miles of Lynchburg in each direction. If you are looking to fish the James, we can guide you so you can enjoy its beauty as we work to put you on fish. The James is historically well-known for smallmouth … [Read more...]

Bite Spot! Bite!

July 30, 2020 by Jim Brewer

This could end up as one of the best seasons for spot in recent memory. For starters, the tasty panfish showed up early this year, in June. Whereas September is usually the prime month for spot, it could be August this year. Small croaker and spot are currently found throughout the lower bay and in the tidal rivers. Anglers fishing at the Virginia Beach Piers and along the beach are … [Read more...]

Fill ‘er Up

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

There were real, honest-to-goodness service stations in Lewisburg, WV when I was a boy. Not only did they pump gasoline, they offered genuine service. As I recall, we had just two gas stations there in the 1950’s, an Esso station on Washington Street, down and across from the post office, and another at the corner of  Church Street and Washington. The second station sold Pure Oil if memory serves, … [Read more...]

Neat Stuff: Leak-proof Storage Lids

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Nancy sent me to the store for some canning lids for her pickles. She said she wanted lids for wide mouth jars. Naturally, since it’s the middle of summer, everybody else in Charlottesville wanted canning supplies as well. I scanned the near-barren shelves and finally saw a couple packs of Ball One-Piece Leak-Proof Storage Lids. I bought two 6-packs. But that’s not what she wanted. She wanted … [Read more...]

Yellow Squash Pie

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

We now have two vegetables in our garden that are threatening to take over our canning shelves and our refrigerator. Tomatoes and yellow squash. We have put up several quarts of stewed tomatoes, but Nancy’s vines continue to produce and mine are just getting started. We also have three healthy squash plants and when conditions are right, three squash plants can feed most of the people in … [Read more...]

Now We Have Black Goldfish

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

I always thought goldfish were, well, gold. But since we installed our small goldfish pond, I have discovered that goldfish can come in a variety of colors - white, gold, mixed white and gold and even black colors. Our 8 original goldfish (now down to 7, the funeral service was last week) have started to reproduce in their new pond. A couple weeks back, Nancy saw several tiny, white fish, probably … [Read more...]

Timberwood Grill Delivers

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Timberwood Grill delivers great food for pickup, but they are also back in action delivering spot-on food in their restaurant on Worth Xing at Forest Lakes. Well, not exactly inside their restaurant – they don’t feel comfortable with that yet, but they are serving outside on their large, shaded patio. Last week – after a bad experience at Texas Roadhouse - we called for reservations at … [Read more...]

Damned Deer

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

My long-time friend Wayne Ferguson lives in Charlottesville’s Dunlora subdivision and has been plagued by deer since the ink was dry on his real estate contract. Wayne, like me, is an amateur vegetable gardener and loves flowers in his yard, but so do the deer and there are a ton of them in Dunlora. But this year, Wayne decided to stop the thieving whitetails and built a nifty cage … [Read more...]

Game Rooms Are More Popular Than Ever

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B As we live through this pandemic and uncertain times, we need to be more creative. While we WILL get through this, many of us are staying at home and many of us with children. Keeping wee ones busy is often a challenge not to mention the older kids. I’m speaking of “old kids”, like myself. Game rooms have become a central social space for family and friends to gather. This space … [Read more...]

That First BLT

July 23, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Plucking that first red-ripe tomato from your garden is more than simply harvesting – it’s a special event – almost the equivalent of Thanksgiving. That’s because after months and months of eating plastic tomatoes grown in hot houses, you can finally slice into a real tomato and enjoy a BLT – bacon, lettuce and a real tomato sandwich. For that first BLT of the season, I insist on … [Read more...]
