Blue(bird) Eyes

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I saw him perched on a limb near the feeder, not 10 feet from the kitchen window. He is our resident male bluebird and he was keeping a close (bluebird) eye on things. He watched the feeder as his potential mate for this spring had her breakfast. Then he watched as she sailed over to the birdbath for a quick drink. I noticed that he cocked his head occasionally, but was often looking off to the … [Read more...]

Slice It Up

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Americans spend a lot of money to pay a butcher to slice and package meats – especially chickens. Why not save some of that money and slice and butcher the meat yourself? Case in point. I felt like barbequing some chicken and thought that a couple leg quarters would be perfect for the two of us – plus, I like dark meat best when push comes to shove. The butchers at Kroger’s were not very … [Read more...]

Mean Bastards

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

That’s what they are - mean bastards. There is no other way to describe them. I’m talking about those a…holes who leave a voice mail on your cell or land line that there has been a $400 or so charge to Amazon and that if you didn’t authorize it, to call them and give them your real credit card number and information so they can steal from you. They are mean bastards. They are not bilking an … [Read more...]

Reid’s Super Save Market

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

In a world of mega-sized grocery stores with acres of wine bottles and craft beers, organic boutiques and glutton-free everything, there is Reid’s Super Save Markets. All they have to offer are the best meats and the best varieties of meat in town, plus fresh local produce and many brands you won’t find elsewhere. I was in Kroger’s recently and struck up a conversation with another couple – we … [Read more...]

A Hatch To Remember

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

(A Jim Brewer article from Virginia Outdoor Weekly, May 13, 1994)   If you hit it just right, there is a hatch of Green Drakes on the Shavers Fork in West Virginia so prolific that nothing else compares. I hit it once while fishing with my good buddy Dave Gladwell. Every trout in the river was feeding in the surface. Squadron after squadron of big, fat mayflies attacked the water. … [Read more...]

New Record Swordfish

January 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

A 597-pound swordfish, caught September 25, 2020 by Nicholas Kontodiakos of Norfolk, has been certified as the new Virginia State Record by the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. Kontodiakos’ catch crushes the existing record of 466-pounds, caught on August 16, 2019, by Tony Gower Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA. The record setting catch was made off Virginia Beach while Kontodiakos was drifting … [Read more...]

Telling It Like It Is

January 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

There are some voices that truly stand out in our past. Boomers look back and remember Edward R. Murrow, Arthur Godfrey, Jack Benny, Walter Cronkite, John Cameron Swayze, Orson Welles, Paul Harvey, Mae West and Groucho Marx as among those voices which needed no introduction. When they spoke, you knew who they were. And there is one more. Howard Cosell, the greatest sports commentator of all … [Read more...]

Trader Joe’s Tempura Shrimp

January 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Every product I’ve ever tried from Trader Joe’s has been first-rate. It is a great grocery store. But I hate going there. First of all, I hate Stonefield Shopping Center. It’s the devil to get in and out of and the parking is screwy. Apparently, others agree with my assessment and many of the storefronts are vacant and a number of restaurants there have failed. Trader Joe’s, a smaller store … [Read more...]

The Robins of Capistrano

January 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Like the cliff swallows of Capistrano, they have returned. Robins. Lots and lots of robins. I’m not sure where they go when the weather gets cold, but they go. Then, one day, they return. Robins are a bit migratory, but it’s mostly an effort to follow the food source. Robins will eat berries and fruits, but as everyone knows, robins love worms and grubs and creepie crawlies. When the leaves and … [Read more...]

Heavenly Cod

January 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Fish is good and it’s good for you. My Daddy used to say that fish was “brain food” so I ate it to get smarter. But I have always loved eating fish. Unfortunately, I like eating fried fish. When we go to the beach it’s always a “Fried Seafood Platter”, maybe good for the brain, but not so much for the arteries. I had seen a recipe recently for Broiled Heavenly Halibut, which would be healthy … [Read more...]
