Stocking Catfish

May 27, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Alex McCrickard, DWR Angling Education Coordinator Every spring, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) stocks channel catfish at various urban impoundments across the state. This effort is part of DWR’s FishLocalVA initiative and is aimed at creating exceptional angling opportunities in urban metropolitan areas. It’s an effort that has a lot of moving parts, from acquiring the … [Read more...]

Help Wanted: DMV

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The Charlottesville Branch of the Division of Motor Vehicles is seeking a qualified individual as a Front Desk Service Associate to replace Isabel Fang, a longtime DMV employee. Isabel had to leave DMV because she got into a fight with a seeing-eye Pit Bull dog accompanying a blind customer trying to retitle his car. Isabel beat up the Pit Bull pretty badly and the Animal Rights people demanded … [Read more...]

Vivace: Great Food, Slow Service

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

People are starting to go back to restaurants as the Covid Panic subsides. They may be in for a surprise. Restaurants took a major hit, many didn’t make it, and most lost employees, good employees and they may be slow to return. Expect slow service when you visit a restaurant. We ate at Vivace’s on Ivy Road this week, a great Italian Restaurant. The food was out of sight, but the … [Read more...]

Sewing Seeds

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

One of my (many) weaknesses as a wanna-be farmer is the actual sewing of the seeds. My garden is not smooth and loamy. It’s more the consistency of a rock pile as the clods of red clay dominate. Therefore, it’s difficult to create that fine soil for planting that young seeds prefer. But I’ve found a way, a better way for me, anyway. I have been hoeing and chopping the garden as … [Read more...]

My Friend Flicker

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

All present and accounted for, Sir. The roll call for my backyard birds has been called and every bird that should be there is there. Catbirds, yep. Thrashers, yep. And the last to make its spring appearance was a Flicker. Northern Flickers are woodpeckers, and I believe they are the most beautiful bird to grace my yard. I found one dead in the front yard a few years back that had either … [Read more...]

Night Guard Solar Update

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

It may be too soon to tell for sure, but so far the two Night Guard Solar Pest Control lights we installed have kept the critters away – namely a thieving raccoon that was getting in our pond, eating snails and fish, turning over water plant pots and making a general nuisance of himself. We installed two lights – facing in each approaching direction and there have been no more … [Read more...]

Outer Banks Driftwood

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

If you can’t go to the Outer Banks, bring the Outer Banks to you. That’s what we did a year ago. After a great four-day getaway, we stopped by Outer Banks Driftwood in Kill Devil Hills on our way back home and bought three pieces of beautiful driftwood. One is now overlooking our goldfish pond. It’s a classic cypress stump that washed up on shores of the Outer Banks, no telling how many … [Read more...]

Spinach Pie

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I’m not proud of it, but I made a Spinach Pie with a Filo Crust. If my Golf Buddies find out, I’m toast. They don’t like playing with Snowflakes. But even Manly Men like Popeye the Sailor like spinach and I had a spinach craving. Spinach is one of those rich vegetables that needs a little help, otherwise it can be too much of a good thing. I was shuffling through recipes and saw … [Read more...]

The Blues Are Back

May 20, 2021 by Jim Brewer

On the saltwater scene, lots of anglers have “The Blues”, as in bluefish. Blues are surfacing on the lower Chesapeake, along the Virginia Beach Shore and at Nags Head on the OBX. Jenette’s Pier reported some nice catches of bluefish. Spanish were also taking Gotcha Plugs from the pier jockeys. Inshore boats were picking up blues, Spanish, a few Kings and some cobia. The cobia action … [Read more...]

The Old Iron Skillet

May 13, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The old iron skillet sat on the stovetop most of the time. There was a place for it in a cabinet below, but we used the frying pan so much - why put it away? The well-seasoned black pan had been with us since Mother and Daddy got married and we moved to Seattle. I think Mama Ida had given it as a wedding present. Looking back, I can’t remember when it wasn’t there – ready to fry up a … [Read more...]
