The Sound of Children

June 10, 2021 by Jim Brewer

When is the last time you were outside and heard the sound of children? You know - running, squealing, shrieking, arguing, singing, playing as children do? Not often do you hear that sound of childish music because most often children no longer play outside. They are glued to chairs in their rooms with cell phones and video games. We are blessed to have a family next door with 3 … [Read more...]

The World of Bluebirds

June 10, 2021 by Jim Brewer

In the world of bluebirds there is only one thing predictable – and that is they are totally unpredictable. Each family that visits and nests in our yard is different. We have been blessed with bluebirds for a number of years and in only one year did they not nest somewhere in our backyard. The main reason we have bluebirds is fresh water. We maintain several birdbaths and that attracts … [Read more...]

Taco Meatloaf

June 10, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I like Tacos. I like Meatloaf. So how about a Taco Meatloaf? Bingo! It’s fun, it’s good, it’s tasty and easy. Here’s how I made mine. For starters, I have been using Ground Sirloin – a 90/10 blend -  in my recent burger recipes. It has lots of flavor but not so much fat – barely enough to drain and in this case, no draining. Put 2 pounds of the sirloin in a bowl and add 1 1/2 C … [Read more...]

The Spades Are Back

June 10, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Two new arrivals in the Chesapeake Bay have created quite a fishing stir. Spanish mackerel along with some big spadefish have made their presence known. Add to that, cobia, red and black drum, croakers, whiting, flounder, bluefish and stripers – and what’s an angler to do? Go fishing. The charter boat Knot Wish’N found lots of Spanish ready to bite while Paige II Charters put limits … [Read more...]

The Old Church Picnics

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Picnic season has arrived. Families will be firing up the Weber Grills, friends might bring potato salad, or a box of Kentucky Fried Chicken. There will be some potato chips, maybe a pie or two and there will be plenty of Citronella candles to keep the mosquitos at bay. But that’s not how picnics once were. Boomers remember church picnics as among the main events of the summer. What … [Read more...]

Pulled Chicken BBQ

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Most anytime I have the opportunity to stop at a genuine BBQ joint, I’ll order a North Carolina-style pulled or chopped pork sandwich. But you know what? A pulled chicken BBQ is pretty darn good itself and has a fraction of the calories of a pork BBQ. Recently, I needed some meat for lunchtime sandwiches and thought I’d buy a pound of sliced chicken at the Deli. The Deli was busy with … [Read more...]

Hobe’s Country Ham

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

My go-to breakfast recently has been a thin slice of country ham on a potato roll slider bun with some melon on the side. Country ham, I’ve found, has a lot less calories than bacon or a slab of sausage, so I can eat that breakfast, get my meat and protein fix and still lose weight. Not every grocery store stocks country ham for slicing, but I had stopped at the Food Lion Deli in … [Read more...]

Gas Guzzling

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I was fortunate to have filled up my tank exactly one day before the mini-gasoline panic we had a week or so ago. I had no idea how long the shortage would last, but I well-remembered the Jimmy Carter Days when odd numbered license plates could buy gas on certain days and only a limited number of gallons, then it was even numbered tags the next day. So for the next few days, I … [Read more...]

Really Bad Bird Behavior

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

My article on BBB (Bad Bird Behavior) last week, describing birds banging into windows and car mirrors, drew a response from my friend Hal Hurka. According to his report, he may have witnessed the all-time low for bird behavior. Hal writes: “Your case of ‘BBB’ reminded me of a time my construction company was called to investigate a woodpecker destroying a large picture window in the … [Read more...]

Reusable Grocery Bags

June 3, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I used to see a lady at Kroger’s from time to time that brought in her own grocery bags, but I haven’t seen her in a while. I’ve come to the conclusion that I may be the only shopper in town to bring my own reusable shopping bags – totes, really. My understanding is that stores are either going to begin taxing the use of those god-awful plastic grocery bags or do away with them … [Read more...]
