Riverside Burgers

July 22, 2021 by Jim Brewer

After my last (and I mean my last) colonoscopy, and because of a delay in the OR assembly line, I hadn’t eaten in over 24 hours. I was still a little groggy when Nancy picked me up and I was starving. She asked what and where I wanted to eat. When you’re really hungry, for me it’s Riverside. Some make fatter burgers, some have fancier toppings, some may use pricier cuts of beef, but nobody … [Read more...]

Mail Chimp Can be a Mail Chump

July 22, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I use a service called Mail Chimp to handle the subscription list to Cville Buzz. The service is responsible for mailing an electronic copy to anyone who subscribes, and unless the subscriber cancels, he or she is supposed to get CvilleBuzz every Friday morning. Supposed to, that is. Sometimes Mail Chimp has a bad hair day and drops a subscriber for no particular  reason. The subscriber then … [Read more...]

Squash Fritters

July 22, 2021 by Jim Brewer

When  squash comes in, it really comes in. Four squash plants can keep the crisper drawer of a refrigerator packed to the gills. Like Bubba in Forest Gump, “There is Fried Squash, Steamed Squash, Squash and Onions, Sautéed Squash, Squash and Tomatoes, Squash and Limas, Pickled Squash, Squash and Grits and the list goes on.” An often overlooked away to serve squash happens to be one of my … [Read more...]

Carp on the Fly

July 22, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The rivers are low and clear, which makes things a little tougher for a smallmouth angler, but a lot easier for a carp fisherman. Yes, carp are gaining in popularity as worthy opponents and especially on a fly rod. Carp primarily feed by smell, but they will also pick up a bait if it looks good, then spit it out if it isn’t. A fly fisherman has a brief opportunity to set the hook when that … [Read more...]

Our Friend: Speedy Alka-Seltzer

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Boomers grew up with a little fellow named Speedy Alka-Seltzer. He was one of us. He was our friend in need. Speedy was there when you ate too much, drank too much, had indigestion, heartburn, stomach aches, acid reflux, aches and pains, bad colds and especially a hangover. He was our friend when we had too much of any good thing. Marketing – such as the promotion of Little Speedy – has … [Read more...]

Corn Dog Muffins

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The best Corn Dogs I have ever eaten came from a small stand just outside the grand-stand entrance to the West Virginia State Fair. Over the years, I made it a point to order one (or two) every time I went. These weren’t frozen, micro-waved Corn Dogs. They deep-fried them on the spot and sometimes there was quite a line waiting. But it was worth the wait for the piping hot, sweet, delicious … [Read more...]

Prolific Bluebirds

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

(A custom bluebird house)   Chris Johnson of Earlysville may have the most prolific bluebirds in Virginia. Maybe anywhere. Chris told me earlier in the year that two pair nested in his yard for the first time ever. Bluebirds are quite territorial and usually put up a stiff fight for squatter’s rights and sole occupancy, but Chris said the two houses were not within sight of … [Read more...]

Cville’s Best Burger?

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The hamburger is as American as - well - Germany. Hamburg, Germany to be exact.  That’s where the first ground meats are said to have originated. But wait. While the term “hamburger” may have found its origins in Germany, it was America that put the famous dish on the map. At the 1940 World's Fair in St. Louis, the term “hamburger” gained worldwide recognition  when … [Read more...]

Catching Crickets

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

We now have four very small bullfrogs in our goldfish pond. We put six tadpoles in the pond back in April and I believe that four successfully became frogs and the others may be on the way. We have had frogs before, and I always assumed frogs didn’t need any help eating things. Afterall, if they can get in in their mouths, they eat it. A friend told us that he once fed his frogs live … [Read more...]

Summer Residential Lighting Tips

July 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Keep cool, wear sunscreen, drinks lots of water, leave car windows cracked if having to leave a pet in the car for a few minutes, and cut grass 2 to 2.5″ in height. Now, in the lighting world, give your aluminum outdoor lighting some love by adding a coat of Linseed oil or a water-based silicone. This will help protect your fixtures from the elements, brighten up … [Read more...]
