Dandelions. A weed? Sure. But a useful weed? Absolutely. Most consider dandelions to be pests – invasive weeds that must be eradicated with a good dose of Roundup, but dandelions are like a health food store growing in your yard Dandelions, of course, are small plants with yellow flowers and deep root systems, but botanists classify them as herbs with numerous health benefits. For hundreds … [Read more...]
A Bumper Crop of Lettuce
We are eating lettuce from my garden every night – sometimes in salads and sometimes just plain old leaf lettuce with mayonnaise and salt on the side. This year I planted 6 heads of buttercrunch lettuce and 2 rows of lettuce from seed. One row was Black Simpson leaf lettuce and the other – as an experiment – was Vivian lettuce, similar to romaine with the texture of buttercrunch. With my … [Read more...]
Chicken Patties with Caramelized Onions
I gained 3 pounds on our short vacation to Lancaster County, but it could have been worse. I ate everything I sight. I have found, though, that if I put my mind and recipes on it, I can lose those quickly earned pounds, but it involves chicken. Lots of chicken mixed, in with fish. To help jump start my weight loss, I went for chicken patties and caramelized onions. The onions did the trick – … [Read more...]
Everybody Loved Lucy
In the earlier years of TV, there were some mega-hits. Shows that everybody watched, with huge ratings. Shows like Gunsmoke, MASH, Get Smart, Dallas, Ozzie and Harriet, and Bonanza. But the very first mega-show was I Love Lucy with Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez, Vivian Vance and William Frawley. Lucile Ball was a glamour actress in her early years and played dramatic parts. Then she married Desi, … [Read more...]
Flounder Time
Flounder have started showing up with greater regularity in the Bay and tributaries. Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets have been particularly good, but the Eastern Shore is still tops. Some black drum weighing over 40 pounds were caught this week, and red drum catches improve daily. Puppy drum and bluefish are being caught from the piers and in the inlets. A huge 10-10 speckled trout was reported this … [Read more...]
The Land of the Amish
There is a land not-so-far away where as many men wear straw hats and suspenders as do those with baseball caps and cargo shorts. It’s a place where the clip-clop along the back roads of farming country is heard from graceful horses pulling the buggies of Amish gentlemen. It’s a land where the sweet aroma of Apple Pies cooling on a windowsill float in the air - where the spring earth is plowed … [Read more...]
Noah, Build an Ark
“Noah! Make yourself an Ark of gopherwood. Make it 300 cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits tall. Make rooms in the Ark and cover it inside and outside with pitch.” That was a tall order from God, but one completed by Noah and his family as the floods came and covered the earth for 40 days. The Noah story is recreated in Lancaster in the sprawling Sight and Sound Theater. What a … [Read more...]
Eating Amish Fried Chicken
One thing I wanted to do for sure during our visit to Lancaster County was to pull up a chair at a dinner table spread with Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. Years ago, I had attended such a feast and I was ready to eat my way through one again. There are dozens of dozens of genuine Amish-style restaurants in Lancaster County, but we chose one near our cottage – Miller’s at 11 Lincoln Highway East in … [Read more...]
A Buggy Ride
A popular attraction in Lancaster County is an Amish Buggy Ride and that’s one thing Nancy and were committed to doing. We found a Buggy operation (there are many along the rural highways) in a town called Intercourse, so named because of the confusing criss-crossing traffic in the middle of town. A young Amish lady hitched our team, gave the reins a tug and we were off, quickly taking a turn from … [Read more...]
Shoofly (don’t bother me) Pie
When in this part of the country, it is mandatory to eat a slice of Shoofly Pie. For me, that was no problem. It’s one of my all-time favorites. Shoofly Pie is a classic Pennsylvania Dutch recipe featuring a super-rich filling made with brown sugar and molasse and it is decadent. Shoofly Pie is basically a Pecan Pie without pecans. Tradition has it that the term “shoo fly” came … [Read more...]
