Cold Water, Hot Fishing

December 15, 2021 by Jim Brewer

As the water in the bay dips beneath the 50-degree mark, big rockfish are piling up along Cape Charles. Many now have sea lice, a sign they have moved into the Bay from the ocean. The best baits for the big fellows are live eels bounced along the bottom. With just 2 weeks left in the season, the lower Rappahannock has also been producing lots of nice fish. Good catches are also coming in from the … [Read more...]

Armed, But Not Very Dangerous

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

“Dad, let’s catch a turtle and cook it.” How well I remember those words. My 13-year old son, Jimmie, had approached me one day suggesting a turtle hunt followed by a turtle skinning and turtle cooking. It would be one of those days I would like to forget. Before braces, before three sets of college tuitions and two major weddings, my wife and I owned a neat little cottage on a private lake … [Read more...]

Citizen Burger Bar

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I avoid the Downtown Mall unless there is a good show playing at the Paramount. It so happened that there was a good show playing - “Christmas with Elvis”, featuring Matt Lewis as a terrific Elvis Impersonator along with Big Ray and the Kool Kats. So, we went to the Downtown Mall with friends and ate at the Citizen Burger Bar. Junior Samples of Hee Haw fame once said don’t order a … [Read more...]

Zebra Mussels: Another Invasive Species

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Beware of Zebra Mussels!  Really? A small bivalve? What are these clam-like creatures going to do, crawl out from the bottom of a river and slime us while we’re sleeping? No, but they are indeed a threat to our environment and the Division of Wildlife Resources has declared them to be an invasive species to be concerned about. Here’s what DWR has to say:   Zebra mussels … [Read more...]

To Brine or Not to Brine

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

There is Good Fried Chicken and there is Great Fried Chicken. Our good friend, Janice Kaltenbach, known to many as Aunt Remus for her ability to tell tall tales, cooks Great Fried Chicken. Aunt Remus once gathered us around the fireplace and told us that Br’er Flounder had only one eye on each side of his head when he was a baby, then his Momma spanked him, and suddenly he had both eyes on the … [Read more...]

Apple Stuff

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I make a dish called Blueberry Stuff – basically a blueberry cobbler but laced with extra butter for yummy goodness. I needed a dessert recently and had 4 Granny Smith apples staring me down, so I decided to make a batch of Apple Stuff. It was as good as the Blueberry Stuff. This is a great dessert option if you don’t have a lot of time and want to “Wow” your guests. Here’s … [Read more...]

Squirrels B-Gone

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The bane of every bird lover is a squirrel. Put out a feeder, and a squirrel, rather than birds, invites himself to dinner. A baffle on the feeder pole works well, but not if there is overhead cover nearby – like a limb or a roof or anything a squirrel can use to pounce down on the food. We discovered one method, however, that absolutely keeps squirrels at bay and that is a bag of Wild Delight … [Read more...]

While Shepherds Watched, Part II

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Tending Special Sheep   Amos, his father Benjamin, and his uncle Shimron had just finished driving their sheep herd some ten miles to the outskirts of Bethlehem. Two other groups of shepherds were using the same ancient fold erected from stones as the shepherds settled into their open quarters that cold, clear winter night. Amos, a young man of 14, had placed his bedding at … [Read more...]

The Tuna Are Here

December 9, 2021 by Jim Brewer

At least they are "here" off the coast of North Carolina. Country Girl Charters out of Manteo fished Wednesday and loaded up with Yellowfin Tuna and Triggerfish. Fishing offshore has been excellent when weather permits. Sea bass are also being caught in good numbers off structure in deeper water. At Nags Head, when the wind isn’t blowing, fishing has been good. On Wednesday, the … [Read more...]

A Richmond Tree Hedge

December 2, 2021 by Jim Brewer

A few years back, our good friends Charlotte and Dick Forrester took us on a Tacky Light Tour in their hometown, Richmond. All I can say is that those folks in RVA really do it right when it comes to Christmas decorations. But as we passed by many houses, I noted a common theme. Many had a single tree decorated that made absolutely no sense. There would be green lights on one branch and … [Read more...]
