Hawaii Bound

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

We’re going again. As you read this edition of Cville Buzz, we will be on our way to Baltimore. Early, early Saturday morning we will fly the friendly skies to Salt Lake City, touch down, stretch our legs and head for Honolulu. Sometime that afternoon (who knows what time it will really be) we will board a Norwegian Cruise Ship and visit Maui, The Big Island and Kawaii. We have lots of exciting … [Read more...]

Buy More Hams

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Want to really stretch your grocery budget? The Inflation Fighter (Yours Truly) says to buy and serve more hams and the best value is often the Butt Section of a Smoked Ham. A ham will feed an army. It’s pretty much all lean meat, it’s not fattening, and you can serve it numerous ways including as a meat for breakfast and super, duper sandwiches. It’s also reasonably priced - $1.79 a pound, … [Read more...]

Great Gifts – Dimmable and Rechargeable Lamps

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Just in time for Christmas, we have these adorable Zafferano Lamps in lots of exciting colors. These are ideal for the patio because they can stay outside – even in the rain. Also, wonderful to use on the dining room table as accent lamps and of course anywhere you need some light. Just touch the top and you are rewarded with just the right amount of light. To dim, hold … [Read more...]

Chick-fil-A Sandwich (almost as good)

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Sunday is often our night to order out – maybe a pizza or a fancy sandwich. When I think of a fancy sandwich, I think of a big, fat Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich. Then I remember it’s Sunday and Chick-fil-A is not a Sunday option. They value their employee’s time, and they are closed on Sundays. Good for them, but bad for me. I really wanted one of those Chick-fil-A sandwiches. … [Read more...]

Carmello’s: Consistently Good

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The secret to the long-term success of any restaurant is consistency. It must be good every time. One bad experience and you go elsewhere. There are simply too many good restaurants to patronize. We have found Carmello’s Restaurant and Wine Bar to provide excellent food and service with every trip. This past weekend, we asked our friend’s, Tony and Barbara Kinn, to join us for an evening out. … [Read more...]

Golden Canary Melons

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I have been trying to eat a little fruit with each meal and my favorite fruits are melons – cantaloupes and honeydews. Problem is when you buy one, odds are that it won’t be good, then you’re stuck with a tasteless melon and have to eat it anyway. So, I have been looking for sure things like Dino Melons when in season and Golden Canary Melons – a winter melon available right now. I have been … [Read more...]

Stripers at Nags Head

November 24, 2022 by Jim Brewer

As the Virginia saltwater striper season heads into its final month, the striper action at Nags Head has been awesome. Capt. Reese Stecher (beachbumfishing.com) has been hammering the stripers back in the sounds – nice fish at that. For the last few years, the average size of stripers in the sounds has increased dramatically – fish up to and exceeding 10 pounds. Anglers are finding tons … [Read more...]

Bertel Turner and “Gorgeous” George

November 17, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When we moved to Beckley, WV, our neighbors on the corner were Buddy and Bertel Turner. An older couple, they took us under their wing. I remember Buddy having chickens and I was able to watch the chicks peck out of their eggshells under a heat lamp. I’ll never forget that. Bertel was often my babysitter when Mom and Dad went to Saturday night dances at the country club. I loved it when Bertel … [Read more...]

Sticker Shock in the Cereal Aisle

November 17, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I don’t eat a lot of cereal, but I used to. Like many American kids, I wolfed down a bowl each morning while reading the puzzles and games on the back of the box and hoping for a great prize inside. Last week, I decided I needed to eat some healthy grains for a change and strolled down the cereal aisle. Holy Corn Flakes! Have you priced a box of cereal recently? A small box of Cap’n … [Read more...]
