The First Tomatoes

June 1, 2023 by Jim Brewer

There is something to be said about above ground garden plots. They produce the first tomatoes. While my in-ground tomato plants finally have a few small ‘maters, Nancy’s plants in her above ground garden cage have already produced vine ripened tomatoes. We plucked three, fat, red-ripe tomatoes yesterday. My Daddy once said that it didn’t really matter when you planted tomatoes, … [Read more...]

Polyester and Disco Music

June 1, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Boomers look back fondly on many events and milestones throughout their lives:  The days of hot cars, great music, graduations, weddings, birth announcements and lives full of excitement and memories. But like the 18 ½ minute gap in the presidential tapes of Richard Nixon, there was one segment from Boomer history that should be erased – the era of Leisure Suits. How did we let that … [Read more...]

Grandma Hitt’s Buttermilk Pie

June 1, 2023 by Jim Brewer

My good friend, Bill Hitt, recently shared a recipe passed down through the Hitt family out of Culpeper. It was Grandma Hitt’s world famous Buttermilk Pie. This is the kind of pie you’d get only at a Church picnic or family reunion. Grandma Hitt was born in 1910 and departed in 1986, but according to Bill, in her time on earth she created some monster meals. Give Grandma Hitt’s … [Read more...]

Drum Fishing at Its Peak

June 1, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Drum fishing in the Chesapeake is at its peak. Both red and black drum are biting – some big ones at that. Both red and black drum are abundant on Bay shoals near the eastern shore such as the Nautilus area. Puppy drum are also available in Rudee, Little Creek and Lynnhaven inlets and are hitting cut bait, shrimp, and artificial lures such as jigs, spoons, soft … [Read more...]

Jim Brown – The Best There Ever Was

May 24, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I don’t remember when it was that I decided to become a Cleveland Browns fan. I think it was when Otto Graham passed for three TDs and ran for three more in the 56-10 win over the Detroit Lions in the 1954 NFL championship game that I became an official Browns fanatic. I lived or died with the Browns, and then something special happened. Jim Brown, All-American fullback out of Syracuse, was … [Read more...]

Turtle Time

May 24, 2023 by Jim Brewer

They are out and about, turtles that is, and all they ask is a little privacy and maybe a lift across a busy road or highway. Below are some of the ways the DWR suggests helping conserve and protect our turtles.   Don’t take them home. Leave wild turtles in the wild. Don’t relocate turtles. If safe, move it off the road in the direction it’s moving. Discard fishing … [Read more...]

Pizza Sliders

May 24, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I made a fun dish yesterday – Pizza Sliders. The kids I cook for love pizza, and they enjoy sliders. Bingo! Pizza Sliders are easy to prepare, they cook in no time, and they are fun to eat. Some make these sliders as an appetizer, but I did mine as a main course and I made plenty. Here’s how. To make a dozen sliders (I made more), start with a package of Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. Slice the … [Read more...]

I Love My ECHO Lawnmower

May 24, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I enjoy mowing my lawn. Well, almost. I would still rather be dunking a minnow near a brush pile and catching crappies or even whacking at little white golf balls that get in my way, but no longer is grass mowing such a chore. Last year, I bought an eFORCE 56-Volt 21-inch Cordless Battery Self-Propelled Lawn Mower by ECHO. It makes lawn mowing practically painless. I didn’t get an … [Read more...]
