Buttermilk English Muffins

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I saw them in the bread aisle on my last grocery store excursion – Buttermilk English Muffins from Thomas, the clear frontrunner in English Muffins. They sounded good and I picked up a package. They were good, and from now on, this will be my muffin of choice. They make delicious toast when slathered with butter and set beneath a broiler, and they also make great sandwiches. And they are very easy … [Read more...]

Butter Corn

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The corn’s a’coming. Fresh corn on the cob. Tis the season for sure. There are dozens and dozens of ways to cook corn on the cob and I’ve never tried a recipe that wasn’t good. Baked, boiled, steamed, grilled? Fresh, sweet corn on the cob? How can you go wrong? But recently I saw a recipe from Spicey Southern Kitchen that is likely to go to the front of the line in my recipe cards. It’s … [Read more...]

Sunflower Chips

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

More than ever, you should be putting sunflower hearts or chips in your feeder/feeders. It’s one of the few seeds that all young birds can eat. That’s because the sunflower husk has been removed and it’s basically a fruit. The chips and hearts are a little pricey and when there were 10,000 grackles hammering away, I had to stop using chips or take out a second mortgage. But they are gone now, … [Read more...]

“Jug o’ rum! Jug o’ rum!”

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We have a bullfrog in our pond. We can hear him croak from time to time. Not the deep bass “Jug o’ rum! Jug o’ rum!” that a mature bullfrog makes. But a nice fat croak. I think this bull frog was a late developing tadpole from a half dozen bullfrog tadpoles we bought about a year ago. Most of the tadpoles became frogs quickly, then seemed to vanish, but “Billy Bull” hung in there and now … [Read more...]

The Turtle Survived

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Serena Grant/DWR Photos by Michael Hundley   Michael Hundley, whose photo is featured on the cover of this year’s Virginia Wildlife Photography Showcase Issue, has been photographing wildlife for four years. What started as a “self-taught” hobby turned into a serious pursuit after Hundley’s photos were first accepted to Virginia Wildlife’s photo issue in 2020. He was … [Read more...]

Saltwater Action

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Flounder are being caught around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel as well as in local inlets such as Lynnhaven and Rudee. Trout and redfish are biting in Broad Bay and in the rivers. Spanish mackerel and bluefish are available along the oceanfront and well up into the Bay. Target them with trolling spoons, Clarks, Drones, behind in-line sinkers, or diving planer boards. Pier anglers can cast … [Read more...]

Doormats: How to Catch Them

July 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Door mats. Big flounder. Fun to catch and even better to eat. Below are some tips from the VA Beach Fishing Center on how to snag a few. Flounder feed near the bottom, so you need to present your bait or lure close to where they are hiding. There are several effective tactics for catching them. One of the most popular methods is drifting with a baited rig, such as a Fluke Killer or a … [Read more...]

Boomers and Brewski’s

July 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

My first memory of drinking beer was at Atlantic Beach in North Carolina. I was about 12 or 13 and Mom and Dad were having a beer and a sandwich out on the deck of a restaurant overlooking the ocean while I and my siblings were dodging the crashing waves. I came up to see them and watched Daddy drinking a Schlitz. I asked for a sip, he handed me the can. I grimaced as the ice-cold beverage slid … [Read more...]

Short-Toothed Mountain Mint

July 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I wrote about this amazing plant last year, but it is worth a repeat. Short-Toothed Mountain Mint is the most astounding pollinator attractor I have ever seen. We have two plants in their second year and at any given time throughout the day there will be 25 to 50 bees – mostly honeybees – on each plant. I have seen more honeybees on these plants in one day than I have seen in my yard for … [Read more...]

Taco Stuffed Peppers

July 13, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Mexican food is fun to prepare. There are limitless possibilities and it’s fun to experiment. This week, I took advantage of some colorful peppers at Aldi’s and whipped up some Taco Stuffed Peppers. Aldi’s and several other grocery stores have been pre-packaging three mild peppers – orange, yellow and red, and offering the trio for $2.75, an excellent price. I bought 2 packages and went to … [Read more...]
