I had to mail a check for a deposit for a vacation rental last week, and as I licked the stamp, enclosed the check and put it in the mailbox, I wished it godspeed. Truth is, I wasn’t sure if or even when the check would ever arrive. That’s how little confidence I have in the United States Post Office.
Lost or late arriving mail has become – not the rare exception – but practically an expectation. And if you can’t trust the Post Office to deliver the mail on time, what good is it?
It’s not like it’s the money. A damned stamp costs (at least this week) 78c. That much times tens of thousands of pieces of mail deposited every minute of every day, and that’s a lot of bucks. There is plenty of money, but no management. This is what happens when government takes control. There is no incentive to perform. Postal employees are known to toss mail on the side of the road if they don’t feel like delivering that day. Some steal checks and credit cards. In our neighborhood, often we have no postal deliveries on a particular day because the regular postman was off and there was no replacement.
I go out of my way not to have to mail anything important, but sometimes you have no choice.
If we put Amazon in charge, there would be few if any postal delays.
