Here’s a serious question. Where do you get the best hot dogs? At a ball game or on a golf course? Many would simply say at a restaurant or a hot dog stand, and they are all good. But the best dogs are the ones eaten outside, in a place you would not normally find a hot dog. While a chili dog with a cold beer is mighty good at a minor league ballpark, I believe the dogs that really hit the spot are found on a golf course, and the wieners at Mallard Head Country Club in Mooresville, NC are some of the best in the business.
We have our annual family reunion in Mooresville and always end up with a hotly contested golf tournament called the Granny Classic at Mallard Head. It’s a public course with barren fairways, but boy do those dogs taste good at the turn. The owner/pro shop operator keeps several dozen steamed hot dogs along with buns on a counter with sweet onions, homemade cole slaw, catsup, mustard, soupy chili, and a tangy relish. We pile in after a rugged 9 holes and load up. The dogs are nothing fancy – probably Jesse Jones, but they are the tastiest things this side of a New York Pizza.
I could eat a half dozen, and the icy cold beer to wash it down with closes the deal. Truly, the best hot dogs are always on a golf course and I believe the very best are served at a little golf course near Lake Norman.
