I bought 4 tomato plants this spring. One was a cherry tomato plant because I enjoy them in salads. Nancy, however, bought three plants for her above-ground garden, and she mistakenly picked out two cherry tomato plants. They are now beginning to produce, and we soon be overwhelmed with the little red and gold fruits (or maybe vegetables. It depends on who you ask).
I say cherry tomatoes, but they may be grape tomatoes or some of each. Grape tomatoes are oblong and shaped like grapes. They’re about half the size of an average cherry tomato with thicker skins. Grape tomatoes aren’t as sweet as cherry tomatoes, and their flesh is meatier and less watery.
My experience with cherry or grape tomatoes is that they are super prolific. One plant will feed a small neighborhood. With three plants, we might have to take a truckload to the Farmer’s Market.
Still, there are worse things – I suppose – than to pop a few of the sweet little tomatoes in your mouth right off the vine for a delicious little snack. I have also found a few interesting recipes for the little fellows. I’m eager to try them.
Hey, I hope we have enough.
