It came in the mail on the last day of 2024. The first seed catalogue of the year. When the days grow short and the bitter wind nips at your face and the grass turns brown and everything seems dead, a seed catalogue will brighten up your day. It tells you that spring is coming, bringing new life and pleasant weather.
I am especially eager for the hope of a seed catalogue because my kids gave me a completely tilled and mulched garden last November. All I need now for a prized garden are a few seeds.
But what to plant?
Collards, maybe and some spinach. A few spring onions and maybe a couple hills
of potatoes, then tomatoes and cukes. With a seed catalogue, anything is possible.
Typically, I buy enough seeds
and plants for a 40-acre spread when I have a postage stamp-sized garden. But
who cares?
Bring on the seeds, bring on nice weather and the hope of spring. It will be
April before you know it.
