With my little garden filled with new organic matter and thoroughly tilled, thanks to a great birthday present from my kids, it was time to have it tested to make sure it had enough of this and not too much of that.
So, for $15 per test, we sent two soil samples to the Virginia Department of Agriculture. A week late, the results arrived.
“No lime!” they said, but the soil could use a little nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages root growth in vegetables, but you have to be careful. Too much will burn the young plants. They recommended 2 cups per 100 square feet. They also suggested nitrate of soda and I ordered a bag from Mr. Amazon.
With exact findings from the garden pros, I now expect my garden to produce beans up to the sky and into the land of the giants. I expect my cucumbers to be two feet long and I should grow enough tomatoes to supply Whole Foods.
That is unless a drought hits, or beetles, or hail, or squirrels, or windstorms. Then it will be, “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum.. no more beans where they came from.”
