It’s been a sub-par year for Farmer Jim. My spring onions and early lettuce crops fared well, but my cucumber vines got caught in the heat and early drought as did my squash plants. I overfertilized and my lima bean plants produced massive bushes but few beans. My tomatoes are finally producing firm, unblemished fruits but they took their sweet time.
However.
About 3 weeks ago, I spread some lettuce seeds in one of Nancy’s raised garden beds, hoping to offset the puny and expensive lettuce heads now offered at the stores, and I now have a bumper crop. Every lettuce stalk is perfect – not a whisper of blight and the bed is producing beautiful Black Simpson leaf lettuce. We had our first tasting last night – crips, sweet lettuce with a side of Dukes Mayonnaise and fresh sliced tomatoes.
Again, I encourage fellow backyard gardeners to grow a bed or two of lettuce. It saves money, plus it is easy to grow and delicious.
