This spring, Nancy bought two large bags of garden soil and 2 red seed potatoes at the Crossroads Nursery.
“This should be interesting,” I thought.
Beside our carport, she placed one bag on top of the other after cutting the top from the lower bag and the bottom from the upper bag. Then, she cut 4 small holes in the top bag and put a couple slices of her seed potatoes – each with eyes – in the holes. That’s it.
In a few weeks, the potatoes sprouted, they grew tall and then keeled over and died around mid-June.
Last week, we began the potato harvest.
I opened the bags, reached into the loose soil and pulled out 6 beautiful red potatoes with soft, melt-in-your-mouth skins. We boiled them that night and they were delicious. I have since made additional harvests – no digging, no chopping, just reach in the bag and pull out what you need.
I have planted potatoes in sacks before and that works, except you have to keep adding layers of soil as the vines grow. With Nancy’s Soil Bag Potatoes, the only thing you have to do is put the seed potatoes in the bag and pull them out when they’re ready..
I encourage those who may have limited spaced but want to do a bit of gardening. It’s super easy and there is nothing like a fresh potato right out of the garden
