My daughter, Laura, who is quite the gardener, says that February 14 is time to plant peas. She does it every year and every year she has a nice mess of the sweet green vegetables.
But February 14? I’m not so sure. You can plant seeds anytime, but a combination of sunlight and ground temperature (45 degrees) causes them to sprout.
I would love to get something in the ground (as soon as this damned snow goes away), but I think I’ll hold off on the peas for another month.
I would like to get an early garden going, and I am thinking lettuce, onions, collards, peas, and potatoes saving cukes, okra, squash, and tomatoes for later. I am also thinking about planting some fall squash varieties such as spaghetti squash.
In the meantime, I am now looking out at my garden and it’s hard to pant anything beneath 8-inches of snow.
Patience, patience.
