Surely everyone is eager to hear about how my little lettuce garden is progressing? Even if they’re not, here goes.
I am super delighted with my miniature lettuce farm. On a lark, I scattered some Black Simpson leaf lettuce in one of Nancy’s empty raised garden beds about 6 weeks ago. I did this because of my frustration with the cost of the shriveled and expensive heads of lettuce at the grocery stores. I was hoping to maybe be able to pick a few leaves before cold weather arrived.
But my garden has prospered beyond my wildest imagination. We have had lettuce for salads nearly every meal and there is no end in sight. As I pick 20 or so of the tallest leaves, by the next day, more leaves rise to the top.
And they are each crisp and perfect, not a single blemish. I am now giving fresh leaf lettuce away to neighbors and the little garden bed is only 2 x 4 feet.
The best part is that I don’t have to trudge down to my garden. I walk about 15 feet onto the carport, pick what I need and eat fresh, delicious lettuce any time I want.
Fellow gardeners – and even if you’re not a gardener – plant a small bed of lettuce in early spring and again in the fall and to hell with all those expensive heads of lettuce.
