We take rain for granted and often we are disappointed when it comes and rains out our golf match or family picnic. But when we don’t get rain for a while, that’s when we know how much we need it.
Last year it rained a bunch and our yards and gardens prospered. This year, however, we had like one inch of rain during the entire month of April. Gardens and lawns suffered. Last year I was mowing my grass twice a week. This year, I have mowed only three times in two months.
The prospects for my little garden aren’t nearly as bright as last year when I grew enough cucumbers to stock all the Kroger’s stores on the East Coast for the summer. But what suffering we small-time gardeners go through is nothing like a real farmer with a thousand acres and whose very livelihood depends on the blessed rain.
This week’s rain certainly helped, we got an inch, and here’s hoping we get more of it in the coming months, even if it screws up our picnics.
