My daughter asked what I want for my birthday – something I really wanted. I thought a minute and said that what I’d really like is for somebody to bring 20 bags of processed manure, dump it on my garden and plow it up.
So, my three sweet children went in together, hired a skilled landscape guy who came out, thoroughly tilled the garden, added the manure, and tilled it again. My garden is beautiful. It looks like the Fertile Crescent along the Nile. It looks so nice, I don’t want to even step in it, but I am already planning for my spring plantings.
There is lots of discussion in the agricultural world as to when or even if you should plow. Many say that plowing disrupts the microbes, geodes and all kinds of other “odes” and disturbs beneficial insects. Some say you should turn the soil over in the winter and till in the spring.
I really don’t care what they say, I hadn’t really plowed my garden in several years and wanted it done. And now it is ready for the seeds to go in.
One benefit to a good plowing and tilling in the fall is that the soil will warm faster come spring, allowing me to get a head start.
Hey, bring on those seed catalogues.
