Recorded voice on the telephone:
“Your call is important to us. Please remain on the line until our next
operator is available.”
What they really mean is:
“Actually, your call is not at all important to us, otherwise we would have had a live person on the phone to immediately assist you with whatever problem you are having with (pick one) newspaper subscriptions, Comcast, Credit Card Billing, DMV, Virginia Power, etc.
Rather than a live person, we will put you hold for 15 or 20 minutes (if you’re lucky) when you will finally be connected with an operator from Bangladesh who speaks in tongues but works cheap. If we really cared, we would have an American who you could clearly understand answer your call, but that would cost us a little extra and you’re not worth it.
We know we have you by the short and curleys, so you’ll just have to put up with whatever we throw your way…. but your call is important to us, so please remain on the line until our next operator is available.”
