Just got back from a family reunion. There were about 30 of us – kissing, hugging, holding babies, and the like. Everything went well until Mr. Norovirus crashed the party. Sixteen of us and counting, bit the dust. It wiped us out.
Norovirus infection causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, and stomach cramps, often striking at the same time. It is nasty stuff and highly contagious. The virus can spread through food or water that is contaminated during preparation or through contaminated surfaces. It also spreads through close contact with a person who has norovirus infection and I expect that was the culprit in our attack.
Diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting typically begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Norovirus infection symptoms usually last 1 to 3 days. Most people recover completely without treatment. However, for some people vomiting and diarrhea can be severely dehydrating and require medical attention.
Norovirus infections occur most frequently in closed and crowded environments, like family reunions and especially on cruise ships. It strikes quickly, sometimes in as few as 12 hours after exposure, A big problem is that an infected person – even several days after recovery – can still spread the virus to others.
You’re less likely to contract the virus outdoors, but in an indoor environment – like sharing a big meal at a family reunion – it can be a killer.
