Wanna have some fun? In the next few weeks, stripers from Buggs Island Lake will head up the Dan and Staunton rivers to spawn. Buggs Island stripers are among only a few freshwater stripers will actually pull off a spawn. But the rivers are packed with these feisty fish and there is one guide I know of who can put you on a pile of fish.
Matt Miles.
Matt is an Orvis-endorsed guide. His specialty is fly fishing, but he will tolerate spinning rods if you must. One of Matt’s favorite haunts is the Staunton River. My late and close friend, Glenn Busch (pictured above) and I were fortunate to take such a trip and we hammered the stripers – lots of 5 -10-pounders and a few even larger. Twenty-pounders are possible. It was a blast.
Matt also guides down in Weldon in late April and early May when stripers make their run up the Roanoke River. On these trips, some anglers catch as many as a hundred fish in a day. They are stacked in the river like cordwood.
Matt is extremely knowledgeable and fun to fish with. Call him at 434-238-2720 or go to mattmilesflyfishing.com and treat yourself to a super day on the water.
