We got a bill in the mail yesterday saying we owed the state of Maryland $21.49 for having the audacity to drive on one of their roads.
Back in May, we drove to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania to see the play, Noah’s Ark. Our GPS Lady – who is now on double secret probation – suggested a route that took us through most of Northern Virginia, half of D.C. and then through Maryland by way of Baltimore. My nerves are on now on life support, but during those travels we drove several miles on I-95 which the Twerp State says is a toll road. I recall seeing a sign that said toll road ahead, but we never went through any tolls – which I consider little booths where you give the lady a few bucks.
But, no! Part of I-95 is a toll road in Maryland even though it was built with interstate funds.
The toll to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is between $16 and $21 depending on the season. So, Maryland charges more to drive up one of their damned roads than to cross the Chesapeake Bay.
If I never go to Maryland again, it will be a blessing. Next time we head that way, I’ll go into the valley and up I-85 to Harrisonburg where the scenery is lovely, the traffic bearable and there are no Maryland toll roads!
