There must be a million wineries in Virginia. Well, maybe not a million, but there are certainly a bunch of them. I have been to many and have yet to have a bad experience. Virginia wineries turn out some great wines.
On Labor Day, we visited a new winery for us – James River Cellars in Richmond, Glen Allen, actually. We took the short road trip to see Jimmy O, one of the last performing artists of old time Rock and Roll – Neil Diamond, the Drifters, Elvis and the like.
Jimmy was playing at James River Cellars and I must admit, this is one of the most elegant winery venues I’ve had the privilege of visiting. Jimmy played in a stunning pavilion that would be a perfect choice for a wedding, or any special event. The grounds at James River Cellars were like a visit to a fine plantation. And the wine was excellent.
A vision of Ray Lazarchic, James River Cellars is known for a grape variety called Gewürztraminer. How you pronounce this, I haven’t a clue, but it’s the cornerstone of much of their wine. Gewürztraminer is described as a drier European Alsatian-style wine, and it’s said to be very difficult to grow.
James River Cellars would be a lovely day trip for those in Charlottesville and Central Virginia. The tasting room is open 7 days a week and the winery offers scores of special events. Check them out at jamesrivercellars.com. And never pass up the opportunity to spend an afternoon with Jimmy O as he strums his six-string and sings music that we all remember but seldom ever hear.
