We went out to eat with my daughter, Angelin, and her husband Brent, near their new home on High Rock Lake in Denton, NC. This is in the heart of Carolina, the original home of classic Southern cuisine and we had it in spades. We went to the afternoon buffet at a place called Classic Family Restaurant. The food was outstanding – Fried Okra, perfectly Fried Chicken, Fried Salt Pork, Homemade Meatloaf, Black Eyed Peas, Cornbread, Pulled Pork, Banana Pudding and all the other southern delicacies. It was all you could eat and cost $16.99 a person.
But it was like eating in an Amazon Warehouse. There were two huge rooms of chairs and tables – nothing else – not a plant, not a picture, nothing. Just two huge rooms. It really detracted from the great food.
Still, the place is always hopping with a jam-packed parking lot and long lines. I guess these Carolina folks don’t mind eating in a warehouse atmosphere if the food is good. And it really was.
