For most boats, it was a week to stay in port and work on the decks and motors at Oregon Inlet. A few boats ventured out on Monday and caught mahi-mahi and had good results with billfish. There were 9 white marlins, 2 sailfish, and 1 blue marlin released Monday. Since then, most boats stayed inshore. A few went just offshore and caught kings, blues and Spanish. Monday, most boats have remained … [Read more...]
Big Browns on the South
Big Browns on the South Tommy Lawhorne of South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro went on an electro-shocking expedition with the Game Department biologists and said they shocked up a 25-inch brown trout. Tommy said the fish was as fat as a non-Tom Brady football and in perfect condition. Tommy estimated the fish at 7 to 9 years of age, indicating good survival conditions throughout the … [Read more...]
The Schilling Show
One voice in Charlottesville rises like a lighthouse beacon in the fog in protest of intrusive and wasteful government. One voice makes sense among all the progressive babbling. One voice stands strongly for the interests of local businesses and their employees. That one voice is Rob Schilling of WINA’s The Schilling Show. As a rule, the various media are more than glad to accept hard earned … [Read more...]
A Fun Round At Tanyard
Greg Leffler, my regular golfing buddy, and I figured we could sneak out for a few hours and get in a round of golf last Sunday afternoon. We wanted a fun course and one that would be uncrowded, so we could get in 18 holes and get back home in time to keep the wives happy. One course quickly came to mind – The Greens at Tanyard Golf Club. Tanyard is one of my favorite places to play. It’s not a … [Read more...]
Chick-chick-a-dee!
Boy, did I ever get a cussing out last week. I was sitting on the patio in my back yard when a tiny chickadee put together a long string of four letter chirps, telling me in no uncertain terms that I was sitting too close to his favorite feeder and would I please move away a little. I did and the scolding ceased as Mr. Chickadee picked out a coice sunflower seed, flew to a nearby limb and deftly … [Read more...]
On The Road For Ringnecks
A ringneck pheasant always cackles when he goes airborne. I guess it’s his way of saying, “Okay, just me and you now. Let’s see how good a shot you are.” We used to have a few wild ringnecks in Virginia, but they went the way of bobwhite quail when fescue overwhelmed our meadows and drove many ground feeding birds into near extinction. There are lots of good preserves in Virginia that offer … [Read more...]
Honey Roasted Cherry Tomatoes
Okay, I promise. This will be the last cherry tomato recipe in our “Now We’re Cooking” series. I believe we have had three before this as I have searched for new and improved ways to find ways to cook or prepare my bountiful supply of these small red morsels. The five “volunteer” vines in my garden really outdid themselves, but finally I am getting fewer and fewer – and I miss them … [Read more...]
Saturday Morning TV
Next to Christmas Day itself and the annual birthday celebration, the most coveted day for young Boomers was Saturday. To be specific, Saturday morning. For Boomers in the 50’s, television was still a novelty. We’d watch anything – Queen for a Day, for example. In perhaps what was to become the first “Reality Show” on TV, host Jack Bailey interviewed an assortment of ladies, they shared their … [Read more...]
Goodbye Cobia
Dr. Ken Neill III says that the cobia are mostly gone - but some continue to be caught. They are being boated mostly be anglers chumming on the hills in the bay and along the oceanfront as well as off of the buoys as they head south. While the cobia bite has cooled down, the red drum bite continues to heat up. Reds are being found by anglers looking for cobia. More fish are being caught stacked up … [Read more...]
Dove Season Underway
Virginia’s dove season is now underway, having opened on Saturday September 5, but many doves were unaware that their presence had been requested and were in parts unknown. Two weeks before the season, there were doves everywhere, perched on telephone lines and dead branches. Then they seemingly disappeared. A recent cooling trend, however, should begin to shuffle migratory birds from the north … [Read more...]
