When it rains, it pours. At least I find that true when things go wrong around the house. In the past few months, our refrigerator died, our wall oven died, our stove top was on life support and our dishwasher was placed on extended leave. After replacing all of the above, we noticed a wet spot on the ceiling of the downstairs bath. A leak! That’s never good and company is coming for Thanksgiving! … [Read more...]
Great Boomer Toys
Countless Boomers will flock to the stores this month to buy what they hope will be welcomed toys for their grandkids, but there was a time when Boomer children also received great toys and gifts for Christmas. Toys were simpler back then, but no less appreciated. There were no computers or electronic games back then, nor cell phones with cameras or IPods. Bikes were overwhelming favorites … [Read more...]
Confetti Chili
Sometimes you have to eat stuff that’s good for you, otherwise it’s “Blimpsville” for your waistline. But sometimes, you want to eat stuff that’s good for you because it tastes terrific. I enjoyed such a dish recently called “Confetti Chili.” Sue Overton of Skyline Graphics rustled up a big batch and it was healthy and delicious. If you try this turkey-based chili, you may never want ground beef … [Read more...]

While Shepherds Watched
A few years back, I wrote a short story called While Shepherds Watched. The story is about those shepherds who were in the fields that night near Bethlehem when Christ was born to Mary and Joseph in a Bethlehem stable. The story is how I imagined the situation, who the shepherds were, why they were there in the first place, what they must have thought and my take on the incredible, heavenly glory … [Read more...]

South River Hotspot
The South River in Waynesboro has been a hotspot in spite of the cooling temperatures. Tommy Lawhorne at the South River Fly Shop said that the water levels were great (before the Thursday rain) and some big browns and ‘bows were coming to net. “”Fly fishermen with good nymphing skills have been doing very well,” Tommy acknowledged. “Brown caddis in a size 16 are still hatching and some blue … [Read more...]

An Unbelievable Deer Hunt
By Sherman T. Shifflett Friends: This is an unbelievable hunting story, and I am not making it up. Around 1970 I started deer hunting, mostly around Louisa County, VA, but I have deer hunted all around Central Virginia. During those 45 years, I've experienced many enjoyable moments, have seen a lot and could write a book. But, today (Thursday, November 5, 2015) takes … [Read more...]
