This was a road trip I have looked forward to for several months. The temperature was 65 degrees, it was warm and sunny and my garden had dried out enough from the snowmelt that I could plant - and it was my day off. I hopped in my Jeep and headed north on Rt. 29 to Southern States. It wasn’t a very long road trip, just 3 miles, but it was a necessary trip before planted my garden. I always … [Read more...]
Grackle Attack
I’m an amateur birder, and as such, I suppose I should love all birds. Unfortunately, I don’t. Grackles. I despise them, and right now, my back yard and bird feeders are under attack. Grackles are among the largest of the blackbird family. They are not attractive birds, they have an irritating song (if you’d call it that), they hang in huge flocks and they eat everything in sight. When the … [Read more...]
Hey Mickey!
By Alan Bittman Fortunately, my wife, Cyndi, and I just missed the latest weather mess here in Albemarle County. Timing! Timing! Timing! While Central Virginia was treated to snow, ice and torrential rain, we were in Orlando. Last year my brother gave us as a reference (read: “sales lead for a time share”) to the folks who run a very nice resort in Florida. The “catch” was a … [Read more...]
Deer Harvest Up Slightly
The deer kill in Virginia has been more or less stable for the past few seasons. It was up slightly this season, about 10,000, with a total harvest of 209,197 deer in Virginia. This total included 103,310 antlered bucks, 15,000 button bucks, and 90,887 does (43%). The record year was 2009 with a total kill in excess of 250,000 animals. Archers, not including crossbow hunters, killed 15,078 … [Read more...]
Cabinets Now At Lights Out
There is an interesting little store in Ruckersville, VA run by an interesting fellow – me. It’s called Lights Out, and if I say so myself, it’s a great place to save money if you are shopping for a light fixture for your home, or for cabinets. Our lights are mostly discontinued items, priced at 50% or more off of the normal retail price. Our cabinets are made in China and come unassembled … [Read more...]
More Old Golf Jokes
I thought maybe most of my readers and subscribers at CvilleBuzz would go for the great recipes, the gardening and birding tips or for memorable trips to yesteryear and the days of Boomerhood. But, nooooo! They like old jokes - the older and cornier the better. So here are a few more old golf jokes. What’s the difference between a bad golfer and a bad skydiver? A bad golfer … [Read more...]
Packing Heat: Squirt Guns
I suppose if a child brought a squirt gun to school these days, he or she would be tased, wrestled to the ground, bound in chains and then really bad stuff would happen. For Boomers, squirt guns at school were a way of life. We considered them to be part of the Second Amendment – the right to keep and bear plastic weapons that would soak your fellow classmates. We did not need a concealed/carry … [Read more...]
Downy Woodpeckers
When my son was a little boy, his name for Woody Woodpecker, the cartoon character, was Woody Pecker. Funny, but when one of our children misnamed something like that, it stuck. Grits, today, are “grips”, a la my youngest, Laura, and biscuits are “bisticks, as my oldest, Angelin, said as a child. So when we see a woodpecker in the backyard or at the feeder, it’s a woody pecker. I believe my … [Read more...]
Charlottesville – Then and Now
By Charles Crenshaw When people find out I was born in Charlottesville, they generally say, “You must have seen many changes.” And they are right. I was born in Charlottesville and have lived in or around here all my seventy-five years, except for my military time. I have seen many changes, some for the better and some not so good. The corner “mom and pop” store locations, for … [Read more...]
Grilled Trout
The Game Department is hard at work, stocking trout in all the appropriate mountain streams and lakes, and fishermen are having early success. That means stocked trout will be welcomed guests at numerous dining room tables, which is good and bad. The bad part is that stocked trout are lacking in flavor, and any flavor they may have tastes like fish food pellets, not crawfish. Hatchery trout spend … [Read more...]
