It’s bluegill time at a farm pond near you! You can’t buy bluegills in a grocery store or a seafood market, but they are such a culinary delight that all fish lovers should head out and catch a few. One word of advice. Fish very early in the day or late in the afternoon. Bluegills are sunfish and the sun hurts their eyes. Therefore they swim to deep water during the hat of the day and return … [Read more...]
Trump National In Charlotte
Want a shock to your system? Play a public course like Mallard Point in Mooresville (outside of Charlotte) for two days in a row, then tee it up at nearby Trump National bordering Lake Norman. It’s like jumping into an ice-cold pool on a hot August afternoon. It’s quite a shock to your golfing system. We had a family reunion in Mooresville (about 15 miles from Charlotte) last weekend and all … [Read more...]
Cobia Fishing Is Fantastic
By Dr. Ken Neill, III Cobia fishing is nothing short of fantastic. Chumming is producing a lot of fish and when conditions allow, so is sight fishing. The big red drum are still around but most are now being caught by anglers targeting cobia. Some small to medium black drum showed in the James this week. Spanish mackerel are being caught in good numbers and size with some citation-sized macs … [Read more...]

Uniquely, Seven Oaks
Dan Corbin has seen lots of properties during his 15 years as a Realtor in Charlottesville, but a recent listing really stands out. “I've never seen a set-up quite like this one,” Dan said of Seven Oaks. “It’s very unique and extremely private with 30 acres in a subdivision.” Dan notes there is even a flowing creek bordering the property. “There are established trails and quiet enjoyment, … [Read more...]
Fun At Swannanoa
I’ve played much nicer golf courses than Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain, but I don’t think I have played any more enjoyable courses. Swannanoa is an easy layout, the scenery is magnificent and the cool, mountain air is most agreeable. For the past 10 years, I have made it a point to visit Swannanoa at least once a year and this past week, my three golfing amigos joined me there for a … [Read more...]

Watermelons Are Mighty, Mighty Fine
Chicken is good. Hambone is sweet. Possum meat is mighty, mighty fine. But give me, oh give me, I really wish you would That watermelon hanging on the vine My Daddy used to sing that song when I was a boy. I don’t know if it was an actual, recorded song, or something he just made up, but he sang it frequently around the house, particularly in summer and particularly … [Read more...]
Wingin’ It
I like chicken wings, but I think they are among the poorest values in the entire meat department. Because of America’s propensity to order chicken wings as appetizers at all the sports bars across country, the demand for wings is higher than the supply, thus the price is inflated. Sometimes – sometimes – you can buy wings at $1.99 a pound if you buy enough to serve Madison Square Garden at a … [Read more...]
Lake Anna Stripers
Striper fishing has turned on at Lake Anna in recent weeks. Anglers are catching them on top at first light, then trolling down to 26 feet and picking more fish up throughout the day. Shawn Blankenship, Rosalyn Rhoads and Tommy Clough combined to catch 9 nice stripers on a recent outing. On an earlier trip, Blankenship and Clough put 8 stripers up to 30-inches in the live well. Cody and Dave … [Read more...]
