Jiffy Peat Pellets
As a backyard gardener, I have been struggling with my tomato crops, of all things. We don’t require a lot of tomatoes, just enough for some sandwich and salad makings, and maybe a few to can. The past two years have not been good. Two summers ago I bought some small plants from a nursery and they grew mightily, plant-wise. They grew so tall I thought maybe they were tomatoes of the Jack and … [Read more...]
Gold Course Ecology
Is a golf course good or bad, environmentally speaking? Many think it’s bad, using precious water resources and occupying prime real estate while appealing only to a select few. Wouldn’t the plant and animal life, and society in general, fare better with all those acres of land used in a different manner? Not necessarily. A golf course, in fact, offers more in the way of plant and animal value … [Read more...]
More Muffins
About a month ago, I saw a box of Blueberry Muffin Mix from Krusteaz, and knowing I had a bunch of extra blueberries, I bought the mix, added some fresh blueberries and the muffins were delicious. This week, I saw that Krusteaz made a Banana Nut Muffin Mix, and I put that in my grocery cart. My wife, Nancy, particularly enjoys muffins. Three days a week, she is up at 4:30 and off to the gym. … [Read more...]
Boomers & Guardian Angels
I expect God’s legion of Guardian Angels is breathing a sigh of relief. Boomers have grown up and most survived their youth, thanks largely to our Heavenly Helpers. Today’s children don’t really need Guardian Angels – they have, after all, a doting government bureaucracy and millions of overprotective parents. If you see a youngster today riding a bike – with parents lurking close by and … [Read more...]
Free Fishing Days
There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as free fishing – free meaning no fishing license required. The Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries is betting that if they allow you to fish for free during their Free Fishing Days from June 3 through June 5 (statewide) that you will enjoy yourself so much that you’ll eventually cave to the call of the waters and … [Read more...]
Virginia Saltwater
By Dr. Julie Ball As Memorial Day rapidly approaches, the spring saltwater fishery continues to escalate with catches improving most everywhere. Weather is still a challenge, so anglers are taking advantage of any break to investigate this trend. The biggest news is the early arrival of the highly anticipated and controversial cobia. Not expected until closer to June, the cobia showed in … [Read more...]
Lake Orange Walleye
Darrell Kennedy of Angler's Landing (540.672.3997) at Lake Orange reports clear water with temperature in in the upper 60's and anglers are catching some nice walleye. Local angler Charlie Blankenship brought in a beautiful 24-inch 4 ½-pound walleye this week. Some saugeyes, a sauger-walleye cross, are showing up after having been stocked two summers past. Largemouth bass are hitting top water … [Read more...]
Hand Me Downs and Tattoos
Not many Boomers were able to avoid the scourge of hand-me-downs – clothes and shoes passed down from older brothers or sisters, or from one family to another. Most Boomer parents were children of the depression, and recycling was a way of life, not a fashion statement. Moms were even known to cut off buttons from old shirts and coats, so you know they were eager for gently used clothing in good … [Read more...]
Great Cabinets at Lights Out
As many of you know, I, Jim Brewer, am now running a lighting fixture outlet in Ruckersville called Lights Out. We get fixtures that have been discontinued from manufacturers and we sell them for 50% and more off the suggested retail. Recently, we added a line of value-packed cabinets. They come in boxes – you have to assemble them - but the savings are incredible. I quoted a lady a 9 cabinet … [Read more...]
