I like chicken wings, but I think they are among the poorest values in the entire meat department. Because of America’s propensity to order chicken wings as appetizers at all the sports bars across country, the demand for wings is higher than the supply, thus the price is inflated. Sometimes – sometimes – you can buy wings at $1.99 a pound if you buy enough to serve Madison Square Garden at a … [Read more...]
Lake Anna Stripers
Striper fishing has turned on at Lake Anna in recent weeks. Anglers are catching them on top at first light, then trolling down to 26 feet and picking more fish up throughout the day. Shawn Blankenship, Rosalyn Rhoads and Tommy Clough combined to catch 9 nice stripers on a recent outing. On an earlier trip, Blankenship and Clough put 8 stripers up to 30-inches in the live well. Cody and Dave … [Read more...]
Weather Permitting
Dr. Ken Neill, III Offshore fishing has been good when the weather has allowed boats to get out there. Good numbers of yellowfin tuna are being caught along with a few bigeye tuna. Dolphin catches are also good and some wahoo are around. Increasing numbers of blue and white marine are being encountered. Bottom fishing is producing some very nice blueline tilefish, some grouper and … [Read more...]
The Perfect Burger
I’ve done this article before, but it’s worth repeating. With backyard chefs bearing tongs and spatulas and heading for the grill, here’s my take on how to make the Perfect Burger. Be forewarned. This isn’t a recipe for the healthiest burger, just the tastiest. You really wouldn’t want to serve a steady diet of these burgers unless you had a death wish, but at least once this summer, indulge … [Read more...]
I’m A Soul Man
The lives of Boomers can be defined by music. In the early years, just after the war, America wasn’t sure in which direction music should proceed. There were crooners like Sinatra and Bennett as well the remnants of the Big Band Era. Country stars like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Teresa Brewer had frequent hit songs as chart toppers, so it was a mixed bag of musical tricks. Then, rock and … [Read more...]
Adding Backyard Beauty
People spend a lot of money these days to add beauty to their yards. They hire landscapers to maintain lush, green lawns and install pools and water falls for a soothing backdrop. Homeowners extend patios, add brick walkways and build outdoor kitchens for entertaining. They plant flowers and shrubs and seemingly spare no expense to beautify their yards; yet, the most beautiful addition of all is … [Read more...]
Goodbye Lord Hardwicke’s
It opened in 1970. It opened at a time when there weren’t that many restaurants in Charlottesville. There were no McDonald’s, no Hardy’s, no Burger Kings, no Domino’s. But Lord Hardwicke’s was now open, and our good friends, Joe and Theresa Davis, went with us to check it out. The place had an English theme. Their signature dish was Fish & Chips. I tried that while Nancy had French Onion … [Read more...]

Tuna, Billfish, Wahoo Arrive
By Dr. Ken Neill, III The tuna bite slowed this week. The yellowfin are still out there, but not at the “boats coming in early with limits” level that we had the previous week. The mako sharks have thinned out also. They have been replaced by more dolphin and billfish and the wahoo have also arrived. It is a good mix-bagged fishery offshore of Virginia right now. Offshore, bottom fishing is … [Read more...]
