It was the family car, but it was more than just an automobile. It was a member of the family. For most Boomers, it was the only “car” member of the family, because most Boomer families in the 1950s and 1960s only had one car. As a rule, moms stayed home and dads drove the only car to work, or if mom had some shopping or errands to run, she dropped off dad and picked him up after work. Kids either … [Read more...]
Presto Foldaway Skillet
Sometimes what you use to cook with is as important as the recipe with which you use to cook the dish. Electric skillets, for example. I have owned a series of electric skillets and found them useful when a larger surface area was needed - as in pan-frying fish or a large batch of squash and onions. Until recently, my electric skillets were poor quality overall. The non-stick surfaces sometimes … [Read more...]
Chung’s Barbershop
For several years, I scheduled haircuts at a local salon. The girl did a great job and was thoroughly entertaining, but often my schedule didn’t match hers. I had to make appointments in advance and sometimes I just didn’t know when I could break away for a haircut. I tried a franchise-type salon for men but wasn’t impressed. Different stylists produced different results, and some weren’t very … [Read more...]
A Road Trip To CrossKeys
There are literally hundreds of vineyards in Virginia, and many are putting out high quality and highly rated wines. Most of the vineyards are also serving as destination sites for special occasions, music and good food. The past year or so, my wife Nancy and I have made numerous “road trips” to CrossKeys, a sprawling vineyard near Bridgewater. We really enjoy their wines, especially their … [Read more...]
Yeti Tumblers – Serious Insulation
I got what I thought was another adult “sippy cup” for Father’s Day. I have a shelf full of them in the basement. But this one was a Yeti, a gift from my son Jimmie. I am familiar with Yeti coolers. I know they are super expensive and I can’t afford one, but people say that if you put ice in a Yeti cooler, you’ll have ice for a long time. So rather than relegate my new Yeti Tumbler to the … [Read more...]
Flounder On The Rebound
By Dr. Julie Ball Summertime is well underway, and the saltwater fishing scene is following suit as catches escalate. The flounder action continues to rebound from the recent stormy weather. The bite is mostly steady this week, although some days are better than others in. Plenty of keepers are available in the usual flounder spots for those willing to work for them. Anglers drifting baits … [Read more...]
The Chick Is Hot!
The Chickahominy River near Lanexa is hot. Lots of fish are biting, especially bass. Mike Johncox at Riverside Camp reported that 17-year old Thomas Carter from Sandstone boated a a handsome 6 pound largemouth. That’s a nice fish for the Chick, a tidal river. Mike also said that if you want to have a neighborhood fish fry for catfish, now is the time. Lots of pan-size (1 to 3 pound) channel … [Read more...]
Dead Squirrels Don’t Lie
I wrote a book a few years back and still have a few copies left. I called it “Dead Squirrels Don’t Lie.” It’s a small paperback with a series of humorous (so I’ve been told) short stories. It’s a fun and quick read. The small books fit particularly well on the back top of the commode. If you’d like a copy, they are $9.95, which includes tax and shipping. Three copies are $25. They make nice … [Read more...]
Hunting On A Major Highway
I once went bird hunting in the median strip on US Route 29. It was one of many amazing adventures in my career as an outdoorsman. Here’s how it happened. It was the mid-1970’s. Elvis was still alive and there were lots of quail in Virginia. Since I was a kid, bird hunting was my passion. At the time I had a young setter named Hunter - the best dog I’ve ever had. Hunter never, ever busted a … [Read more...]
TIMBER!!!!
By Dan Corbin Late last year, the trust members of the family farm decided to research and implement some "good practice procedures" for the forested portion of the property. I contacted (Ed Furlough) the Virginia Department of Forestry, Charlottesville office to begin the conversation. A forester visited the site, did research and evaluations and delivered a binder of overview … [Read more...]
