Capt. Steve Chaconas says it’s officially a summer pattern. On tidal rivers like the Potomac, the veteran fishing guide says that unless there’s cloud cover, start on top and work down - with one exception. The exception is hollow frogs over matted grass, even with full sunlight. This is especially effective during the hottest and calmest parts of the day. It’s also a good time for punching … [Read more...]
Go Jump In The Lake
Boomers loved to swim. Whether it was the ocean, a creek, a nearby lake or a chlorine-drenched swimming pool, when summer came, Boomers went swimming. Today’s kids have so many activities that it boggles the mind. Even in summer, there are gymnastic classes, T-Ball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer camps, day camps and the like, not to mention the myriad of electronic games and gizmos … [Read more...]
Froggy Went A Courting
He showed up about two weeks ago, a baby frog sitting in the catbird’s seat in our small lily pond. Don’t know how he scaled the three foot sides with a rim, and I don’t know how he even knew there was a pond up there somewhere, but he came and I am delighted. I love frogs. I call our new guest, Uh-Huh”, the same name I have used to describe the 4 or 5 frogs we have had in the past. “Uh-Huh”is … [Read more...]
Salt and Pepper
I confess. I am a Cooking Channel junkie. I find it fascinating to watch the chefs battle it out on Chopped and I love to see Robert Irvine hammering the amateurish chefs at failing restaurants on Restaurant Impossible. One thing I have noticed on all these cooking shows: A main complaint from the judges in their critiques is a lack of seasoning. These – many experienced chefs from top … [Read more...]

Band On The Run
Neither heat, nor thunderstorms, nor a chintzy Charlottesville City Council (that chose not to help fund the band) can keep the 80-member Charlottesville Municipal Band from their appointed rounds. Those rounds include three programs slated throughout the remainder of July. Says Band Director, Steve Layman, “All performances are FREE and open to the public.” On Tuesday, July 19 the band will … [Read more...]

Cats On The Prowl
Tidal James Big cats are on the prowl on the lower James. If playing tug of war with a 50-pound plus blue cat is your thing, head for Petersburg/Hopewell and bring along some cut shad for bait – and a powerful rod and reel! The cat action has been so good that bass anglers are complaining that catfish are eating their lures. Lake Chesdin has been giving up lots of crappies, plus … [Read more...]
Putting: How Hard can It Be?
The green is smooth, not a blemish in sight. It even looks relatively flat. The ball is perfectly still. The wind isn’t blowing. There is no glare from the sun. It’s big hole and a little ball. It’s only 5 feet. How hard can it be? When it comes to putting, it’s damned hard - one of the most difficult things an adult male will ever be asked to do – next to shopping with your wife for a dress that … [Read more...]
