These are not your ordinary, garden-variety animals. These are musical beasts. They play with the Charlottesville Municipal Band and they are eager to perform for you – at no charge. Just don’t throw peanuts at them lest they clog up their tubas. For the 80-member band, the summer season is winding down. Director Stephen R. Layman recently announced that the band will close out its 94th season … [Read more...]
Flounder Action
Dr. Julie Ball reports. The flounder action in the Bay is very productive. Good action is coming from near shore and inshore wrecks, where anglers are taking limits of nice fish running 22- to 24-inches. Some keeper sea bass will also take baits on the same wrecks. In the Bay, jigging and live bait are both techniques working well around all four islands of the CBBT, where flounder are running … [Read more...]
Summer Walleye
Darryl Kennedy says that in spite of the warm weather, Lake Orange anglers are still catching nice walleye in the upper end of the lake. There have been some really nice largemouth caught on slow moving baits. The crappie are holding in 10-15 feet and they’ll eat a small minnow if they see one. Catfishing remains strong throughout the lake. An 8-pound flathead was caught this week. Give those … [Read more...]

Chiggered!
Boomers recall lots of childhood memories. Some good and some not so good. One of those not-so-good memories for me was when I got “chiggered.” I was spending a week at Grandma Brewer’s, in Clemmons, NC, an annual event soon after school let out. My father, who was killed in World War II, had 8 living brothers and sisters and I was often passed around from Brewer to Brewer as I visited. On … [Read more...]
Late Nesting Bluebirds
We had a pair of chickadees that nested in our bluebird house on the fence in April. I was disappointed not to have bluebirds, which usually occupy that box, but they passed us up. In May, a pair of bluebirds decided they would, after all, nest in the box just vacated by the chickadee family. We were delighted. In June, when the bluebird chicks would have fledged, we were out of town and … [Read more...]
Catfish Nuggets
I can’t imagine going grocery shopping only once or twice a week. How would you ever know what looked good on a particular day or what’s on special? I go at least five times a week and rarely buy more than one day ahead. Grocery shopping is something I really enjoy. Last week I stopped by the seafood counter at Kroger’s. I felt a little “fishy” that night. The salmon looked good but we had … [Read more...]

Jak’n Jil Restaurant
If I was on death row and the warden asked what I might want to eat for my last meal, I’d think long and hard about a Foot Long Hot Dog Platter from Jak’n Jill in Charlottesville. I happen to love hot dogs. I even enjoy a plain old boiled dog on a bun with a little catsup – like you’d get a Little League baseball game. But the Foot Long Hot Dogs at Jak’n Jil are something else indeed. The … [Read more...]
Dead Squirrels Don’t Lie
I wrote a book a few years back and still have a few copies remaining. I called it “Dead Squirrels Don’t Lie.” It’s a small paperback with a series of humorous (or so I’ve been told) short stories. It’s a fun and quick read. The small books fit particularly well on the back top of the commode. If you’d like a copy, they are $9.95 each, which includes tax and shipping. Three copies are $25. … [Read more...]
