By Capt. Alan Caine I just wanted to send out a quick report on Louisiana. I made it here late last week and the fishing has been good. We had one very windy day, which was tough, but the other four days offered many shots at big redfish, 20-pounds or more, as well as countless opportunities at fish under 15-pounds.. We have been catching them on fly and light tackle spinning gear … [Read more...]
Trout Fishing Heating Up
As the water temperatures drop, the opportunities for good trout fishing increase. Most streams are low, however, so cautious approaches are vital. The Lower Jackson remains a good choice. The water levels have been stable and trout to 12-inches are hitting small nymphs. The larger fish are more likely to go for a flashy streamer. The water is low and clear in the catch and release section … [Read more...]
Virginia’s Elk Herd Thriving
Elk were once native to Virginia. Elkhorn Lake in Augusta County is a reminder of their past presence and the Elk River in neighboring West Virginia is a tribute to the great animals. A few years back, Virginia decided to join in with Kentucky to bring elk back to our region. How are they doing? In a word. Spectacularly! According to the Game Department, since restoration efforts began, … [Read more...]
Liberty Mills Farm for a Fun Day
It’s autumn. The leaves are changing, wineries are offering outside entertainment and Virginians are flocking to the countryside to enjoy our accommodating weather and beautiful scenery. Always a fun way to spend an autumn afternoon is a visit to Virginia’s Largest Corn Maze at Liberty Mills Farm in Somerset. Say the folks at Liberty Mills: Our 2016 Maze is challenging and fun! Come visit … [Read more...]
Ritzy Chicken Thighs
Everything is better with a Ritz cracker – raw oysters, smoked salmon, cheese spreads and especially peanut butter. I also use Ritz crackers instead of breading or cracker meal when frying foods. Last week, I was at Kroger’s trying to come up with a tasty meal that would not add weight to my bathroom scales the following morning when I saw a package of boneless, skinless thighs for about four … [Read more...]
Cedar Waxwings
I know my backyard birds - the regular visitors, the bluebirds, finches, chickadees, cardinals and other year round residents - but I am always excited to see newcomers and visitors. On several occasions, always in the spring, I have had a flock of cedar waxwings clinging to the branches high in the trees in the back yard. I wish they would visit more often. They are spectacular birds, but … [Read more...]
Squeezing Coins
During the World War II, rubber and plastics were simply not available to consumers. But after the war, things changed. Needing to keep assembly lines open, manufacturers developed tens of thousands of new rubber, plastic and fiberglass products. Among them was the rubber squeeze coin purse. Every Boomer kid had one. It’s where we put the 10 cents for admission to the movies. It’s where we put … [Read more...]
Great Food & Scenery at 2 Sides
Golfers know that the food they eat at the turn from the local pro shop is not always ideal. If you’re lucky, you won’t get E-coli from the hot dogs. But there is one golf course grill in Charlottesville that is so good, it draws non-golfers throughout the day. And that’s 2 Sides Restaurant at the Meadowcreek Golf Course. The reason it’s good is that they have cooks on staff that actually know … [Read more...]
The Tufted Titmouse
They are pretty little birds with gray suits and dark black eyes and a black face. They are tufted titmice and we have a family in our yard each year. The year-round residents visit our feeders regularly and they absolutely love peanuts. I don’t spread peanuts in my yard as much as I once did because that encourages the squirrels – destructive varmints that they are! The squirrels actually … [Read more...]
Dead Squirrels Make Great Gifts
Christmas is coming and sometimes the hardest gifts to find are those that don’t cost a lot, yet are appreciated. A few years back, I wrote a short, paperback book called Dead Squirrels Don’t Lie. It is a collection of short, humorous stories and some are even true. The little books sell for $9.95 or three for $25. If you’d like an autographed copy or two, send a check (no tax or shipping … [Read more...]
