From Mossy Creek The Rivers It is hard to believe that it is December already. This is the time of year when we can sometimes have the best musky bite of the year. We say sometimes because weather can be a big factor in just being able to get the boat in the water. If the weather plays nice enough and the rivers don’t ice over completely, the fishing can be awesome. The … [Read more...]
Gingerbread and Lemon Sauce
Sherman Shifflett and I were reminiscing recently about great recipes from our past, particularly foods that are special come Christmas time and he mentioned gingerbread with lemon sauce. We used to have that as a kid. A neighbor baked it and gave it to us at Christmas each year. Boy, was that good stuff! Both Sherman and I remembered eating and enjoying it. So Sherman went to work and found an … [Read more...]
A Gift For The Birds
For an entire year they have entertained us and brought immense beauty to our yards. I speak of the birds, our back yard companions. So maybe now is the time to give back to our fine-feathered friends with a Christmas gift they will enjoy. Actually, one of us humans really needs to give this gift to another human so we can hang it in the yard or on the porch. The gifts I suggest are birdseed … [Read more...]
Sugar Cookie Bake Off
Faithful CvilleBuzz reader, Bob Huff, noted that his wife, Doris, thought the Betty Crocker mix for sugar cookies was better than Krusteaze – which I think are among the best sugar cookies I’ve ever put in my mouth. I was skeptical, but suggested that Bob arrange a bake-off to determine which indeed was the best sugar cookie mix – Betty Crocker or the Vanilla Butter Sugar Cookie mix from … [Read more...]
Thoughts On Boomerhood
I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do the second week. Old age is coming at a really bad time! I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance of idiots that needs work. Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound! The kids text … [Read more...]
Stripers In The Chick
Mike Johncox at Riverside Camp says that nice size stripers are tugging on lines in the Chickahominy River. "We are catching plenty of 24-inch fish," he says. In addition, the catfish bite is still going strong with quite a few 20-30 pounders coming to net. Some even larger than that were also reported. The bass are being caught by anglers drifting large minnows at the mouths of major feeder … [Read more...]
Chilly Waters
By Dr. Julie Ball As the water temperatures continue to cool, some windows of opportunity are allowing boats to venture further off shore, where anglers are having some decent catches. Wreck fishing is improving off the Virginia coast, with good hauls of jumbo sea bass ranging to over 4-pounds reported. A few triggerfish are also available around the Triangle Wreck area, along with … [Read more...]
Save Strokes – Get Fit
Golf swings are like snowflakes – every one is different. One-size-fits-all hardly applies to golfers and their equipment. “You can’t play your best golf unless your clubs fit your personal swing and style,” states Kevin Gibson, Manager of the Charlottesville Golf Center on Berkmar Drive. “It is very important to have the right club to match your swing.” One of the best ways to reduce your … [Read more...]
South River News
A thousand browns were stocked in the South River. The folks over at South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro note that with the much-needed rain this week, the South River should be in great shape for this weekend. So far, there have been three fall stockings in the downtown Delayed Harvest section, so there are plenty of trout. Recently, SVTU and the shop, along with angler donations, … [Read more...]
Holiday Band Concert Dec. 11
It’s never really Christmas until the Charlottesville Municipal Band stages its annual Christmas Concert complete with beautiful Christmas music, sing-along carols, and – I don’t know how they do this – but it actually snows inside the auditorium! After all that, it’s time for Christmas. Band Director Steve Layman announced that the 2016 Christmas Concert will be held on Sunday December 11. … [Read more...]
