By Daryl Daughtrey An old golf guru once told me that when your shots start going everywhere, other than where you want them to go, head to the practice tee and start subtracting. Subtract everything you have read about the golf swing, what you’ve been told or learned about the golf swing. What this guru meant was that a golfer must get back to the basics. As golfers, we only have … [Read more...]
South River Update
From Tommy Lawhorne Fishing has been steady on the South River with caddis and midges hatching most days. Lots of nice trout are being caught on the Catch and Release Area near Downtown Waynesboro. The Missing Link caddis dry and the amber Arlies' Gnarly Larva have been go to patterns. Above is a picture of Ian Hall with nice Rainbow from Downtown this week. Water levels continue … [Read more...]
Reach For The Sky
Since the introduction of moving pictures, and especially after television arrived, Americans have been fascinated with the Old West. For Boomers, western movies were a mainstay of entertainment. On the Big Screen, the “oater” films hit their stride in the 1950’s. The plot of almost every western was the same: The good guy in the white hat rides into town, shoots the bad guys and rides off into … [Read more...]
A New Golf Book
Dear Friends, Many of you may not realize it, but I've been very busy over the last few years planning my retirement, and putting my thoughts and ideas together into a book which I hope will carry me through it. I believe my new book on golf gives the reader valuable playing tips and insider information I've gained through my years of lessons, struggle, and experiment. I am very proud of … [Read more...]
Gardner’s BBQ
Three of my golfing buddies were headed to Myrtle Beach this week for a long weekend. I knew they would be traveling down I-95 and bypassing Rocky Mount. “Don’t go around Rocky Mount,” I advised. “Head for Gardner’s BBQ and go through their buffet. They have the best BBQ and soul food in North Carolina.” And they really do. Several years ago, Nancy and I were headed to Topsail Beach near … [Read more...]
Feeding The Finches
I am truly a doofus, as my wife constantly reminds me. But she’s right. Sometimes I think my brain is in the charging mode and not really plugged in. For example. A thistle sock I used last summer to feed finches was completely worn out, so it was off to Lowe’s for a replacement. Instead of buying another sock filled with thistle or nyjer seed, I bought a bag of finch food and a new, plastic … [Read more...]

Homemade Hot Dog Chili
My name is Jim Brewer. I am a Hot Dog-aholic. I am a “Frank-enstein”. I love wieners. Some of my favorite places to eat out include hot dog joints. Jack ‘N Jil in Charlottesville and Jim’s Drive-In in Lewisburg, WV come to mind. And I love to put a few franks on the grill from time to time. I always make extra and eat them heated up for lunches throughout the week. I enjoy hot dogs because … [Read more...]
Tuna Out of Oregon Inlet
By Dr. Ken Neill, III The wind has been the most persistent fishing story. That and the return of winter-like temperatures have severely limited fishing activity. When boats can get out, Bluefin tuna have generated most of the excitement. Boats fishing out of Oregon Inlet are catching Bluefin tuna in the 250 to over 500 pound range. Yellowfin tuna are also available. Blackfin tuna can be … [Read more...]
Perfect Brookie Conditions
By Mossy Creek Oiutfitters The peak brook trout season is basically here. Water levels are still under average flow but hopefully this snowfall and rain later in the week will help. Keep an eye out for nasty wind through Thursday. We are hopeful warm weather will return by the end of the weekend and the brook trout fishing will fire back up again. Keep your fingers crossed for more wet weather … [Read more...]
